2014 Huntsville Vapors & mCX! (and their little Friends!)

See our earlier closed thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=898132 for 2009-2010 organized indoor flying photos and discussions in/around Huntsville, Alabama.

The first few posts in this discussion are like an index of the various indoor R/C flying sites, clubs, and schedules here in Huntsville. Several are reserved for additional flying sites. I'll update these first few posts with their latest schedules.

Post #2 is for Grace Family Fun Flys held at Grace United Methodist Church, as scheduled, on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 PM.

Post #3 is for MARS Micro Modelers club fly-ins on Redstone Arsenal, as scheduled, on weekday afternoons from 4-6:30 PM.

Post #4 is for St. Mary of the Visitation Parish Center gym fly-ins, virtually every Monday evening (except holidays) from 6-8 PM.

Post #5 is for Brownsboro Baptist Church gym fly-ins, every other Monday evening (except church schedule conflicts and holidays) from 6:30-9:00 PM during the cold winter.

Post #6 is for Madison County High School gym fly-ins, as scheduled infrequently.

Posts #7, and 8 are reserved. Please let me know if you organize another indoor R/C flying site open to the public, and I'll share the info and schedule there.

So far, all the indoor public R/C flying sites that I know of in/around Huntsville are totally free for pilots and spectators, and none require AMA membership to fly.

They have a beautiful new full-court gym with a nice high unobstructed ceiling. Spectators can sit around the perimeter of the gym, stand around the second floor walking track, or sit on the stage. We fly small helis. quadcopters, and airplanes. We have some R/C surface vehicles available for the younger children to race about with.

Jim Marconnet is the POC. PM him here, or he's in the Huntsville AL phone book.

MARS Micro Modelers Club flys on Redstone Arsenal in NASA Building 4316 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM weekdays as scheduled. Al Clark is the President. They have an automated email list for schedules, etc at http://arix.net/mailman/listinfo/mmm

Next is Wednesday 11/12/2014, 4-6:30 PM.

Anyone with access to RSA can fly free with this free club. You need a CAC to get onto RSA. Or a friend with a CAC can drive off the arsenal, pick you up in his/her vehicle and drive you in through security, where you will have to show your driver's license to be admitted.

Building 4316 is located on Digney Road, just west of Morris Road. It's just West of a big white plastic quonset-looking building that's the NASA Fitness Center.

Any electric, rubber, or CO2 plane or heli up to their 8 oz weight limit may be flown there. But look out for the ceiling lights and the yellow electrical outlets and network drops hanging down from the rafters in two long rows!

Pilots fly at the St. Mary of the Visitation Parish Center gym, downtown Huntsville, virtually every Monday evening (except holidays) from 6-8 PM. Bob Gabrys is their leader.

220 Lincoln St NE, Huntsville, AL 35801

Mapquest: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?address...ntsville%2C+AL

This full-court gym is great for smaller planes like the Vapor and the Ember, and smaller helicopters like the Blade mCX, mSR, and the CX2.

I started on a new foamy recently to use the guts from a UM4Site that I bought really smashed up. I had forgotten how little I like to build - to put it another way, I've gotten really spoiled with RTF planes like the Vapor, etc.

Hopefully I'll have it all ready to go fly at the first GFFF in January 2011. Surely I can accomplish that! (1/8/2011 - Nope!)

It will be interesting to see some of the planes and helis that were opened up Christmas Day around town!

Jim

Update: It does not look like I'll have this new foamy ready to fly January 9. I spent the entire Christmas to New Years holiday cleaning and reorganizing my office/workshop! And I still have a very long way to go there.

Good info here Jim.

Thanks for posting and keeping on top of this

Look forward to some indoor flying now that the weather has turned cold and nasty.
