The Budget Drive Mk2

After the long thread about the 25 dollar motor it is time for a new one to put some new life into this project.

Old thread;
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...tronik&page=11

This time i used a Plettenberg 5:1 gearbox and smaller prop. Kindly supplied by Frank in the Netherlands and as soon as i have test flown, he will be getting this drive for the next flying season.

Setup;
RFM 16x17 slim
HM Spinner 32mm with 40mm yoke
Plettenberg 5:1 gearbox
Hobbycity KD36L 3000KV
CC P125 with full George mod
Turnigy 6S 3000mah 40C

Alternatively, 5S and big 17" props.

Teaser picture..... note the gearbox front fits where a Neu does.

The parts and how they go together.

In this case there where no bolts supplied to bolt the gearbox to the motor so i had to pull some M3 bolts out my drawer. Make sure they are not to long as this could damage the windings on the inside of the motor!

You need to use some high strength stuff to put the grub screw in the pinion. The other screws are fixed in place with some low strength loctite.

The gears are already pre lubricated.

All done in about 15 minutes.

In this case i replaced the 3 glass fibre like sleeves on the motor wires with some 10mm heatschrink as they where just loose on the wire and the heatschrink gives a bit more support. Note, if you use to small diameter heatschrink it will split from the heat when you solder the ESC wires to the motor wires.

Also, when i solder the 6mm bullet connectors i put some kapton tape on the male connector to stop any accidental solder from flowing in there and i use an old wood clothes peg to hold the connector while soldering.

The CC P125 was modified as per; http://www.f5b.co.uk/?q=node/215

Finished.

A little static run just for fun.

Incase you can't read it...... that's about 250A, 20V and 5KW peak static.

I can see KD36L motors with KV of 2200, 2700, 3500 and 4000. Have you made a typo or is the 3000KV motor hidden away somewhere on the HK website?

And out of interest, how much did the gearbox cost after shipping. IOW, what is the total cost once attached to the $25 motor so we can compare it to a Kontronik/Plettenberg/Hacker/Neu alternative.

Regards
Mike

Thank you. When I search for 'all inrunner motors' I see the 6L, 7L and 9L but no 8L. The 8L must be hiding on another page.

Mike, i do not advise this route over simply buying a Hacker motor with 6.7:1 gearing. It was just for fun and to take the mickey out of the much more expensive motors.

gearbox 109 euro
postage 6,90 euro
motor 28,95 usd
postage 6,99 usd

total 144 euro

More disturbing..... the total weight is 350 grams. This gearbox is a little more heavy compared to a Neu P32.

Some people asked me about the 5KW, well this is static and in flight you will see a bit less but still above 4KW. No different then the Mk1 budget drive to be found at the end of the thread i linked to in the first post. Hense i have no doubt the motor will be OK. The only question is the gearbox.

And I'm not considering changing either, but it is interesting that you can get a good geared inrunner setup for under 150 euro.

Thanks Joe, I have already 100% exact same setup (motor, cells, prop, P125!!!) - just lacking a gearbox. My motor is still in its box, and actually the cells are still on their way in.
Thus very interested in these tests .

I'll wait for your conclusions between a P32 and a Pletti gearbox, and wether 6.7 or 5:1 ratio is better (maybe a 17*17 or 18*21 would be better with a 6.7 then). By the way, when checking for a gearbox I could not find a place that had the Pletti in stock. Where did you get it from ?

The 40C Turnigy 3000 seem to fare pretty well under 220A+, I calculated 3 mOhms from your test, quite good, especially if they were not pre-heated (?).

I think I have 2 props you don't have, these are unmarked, If I recall well they were sold by Stratair about 2 years ago, 17*17 and 18*something, fit on straight yokes no need for the twisted & offset RFM special spinner (that's also why I got them initially). I think Stratair themselves built these props, but it seems they only carry a 16*16s now. You may want to ask them, in case you want to experiment straight yokes with these different 17" and 18"...

Mike, we wait to see a good Chinese gearbox.

Proto, the Neu P32 6.7:1 will be best if you can get it. It's lighter, better construction and proven. Also the higher ratio is better, it allows bigger prop or higher KV motor.

Yuri, explain your self.
