Peck Polymers Pietenpol RC Conversion

So here it is. I am using an AR6400 with a motor from a Parkzone Cessna. I am hoping to fly it this coming Sunday. I'll have some better pictures up soon.

Bummer on the 6400/heat gun incident! I've done it. Heat shrink tubing works so well for making pushrods, but it does require planning!!

Luckily I had an extra AR6400. I was using my wife's little embossing gun from her craft stash. It gets pretty hot.

Here's what I do. Before you mount the pushrod/shrinktube/z-bend onto the Rx, shrink it so that you can barely, comfortably, adjust the length. Then after installing it, and adjusting, add just a tiny drop of medium CA on the point of a pin to one end of the shrink. If you need to readjust later, use a drop of debonder, wait a couple of minutes, then readjust.

Thanks for the tip. It was a pretty tight fit in there and I was having a hard time aligning the fittings before installation so I tried a shortcut and it got me. Oh well, I wont do it again.

Very cool! I built a peanut Pietenpol about 25 years ago for 2 strands of 1/8" rubber. I also had a Balsa USA (I think) one with an OS40 4 stroke. Believe me when I say it will fly a LOT better without the radiator there! Talk about the world's most effective airbrake. Is it rudder/elevator or have you gone crazy and added ailerons? What will the AUW be?

Stu.

MegaTesla,
Love your Piet man. I really like your wheels. Did you make them yourself?

Stu,
No ailerons. Only rudder and elevator. I am not sure on the final AUW. My scale took a dump on me. I have been meaning to swing by harbor freight and pick up another one.

I got the wheels from a Nowlen Aero Bristol Scout kit that I bought from A2Z Corp. I built the Bristol Scout but soon afterwards the balsa in the wings became soft and because of all the wing flex it isn't flyable. Not sure what went wrong there

If you want a less obtrusive engine you can always model the Pietenpol that is up at Old Warden:

Yeah, it's pretty common for folks to use C-65's, 85's and Corvairs in their Piets instead of the old Ford motor.

Well. I am finished with this plane. I ended up having to put the battery way up front up in the cowl to get the plane to balance. I hope to fly it on Sunday. I will try to get a video posted. Final AUW is about 20 grams or .7 oz.

I glued it on with purple UHU and put two coats of Aero Gloss thinned 50/50 over the top.
