If you are looking for a 5-6s setup, I don't think you can beat the power combo. Price - maybe, but not value for the price. You do need a first-tier ESC to enjoy the plane. Once you factor that in and add extra shipping, you might just as well get the combo.

Getting the power combo is a good choice as well ($170.00).

The Infinite A4020-540kv (291g) is great on 5s-6s. Should have no problem spinning 15x8 on 5s .... and 14x7 or 15x6 on 6s. Crazy power, VERY well built for less than $45.00 shipped. Rated at 800w, but some people have pushed it to 1200w without issue (3D flying). The rating is very conservative like Hacker, but you need to choose a motor with right kv.

ESC is your choice. ICE 75 is one of the best. I found an almost-new one from classified for $70.00 shipped. Or if you buy 2 from Tower, it's $85.00 shipped.

Hobbywing or similar brands 60-80A ESCs are good choices too. The 60A is about $30.00 and the 80A is about $40.00. On 6s, 60A x 23V = 1380 W, 80A x 23V = 1840 W. They work fine as long as you dont push beyond their rated capacity. Hobbypartz has them for the best price.

So, $45.00 motor + $40.00 ESC = $85.00 is about half of the power package.

I wouldn't mind going with the recommended setup from 3DHS or EF, but if building more than 5 planes this size (or larger), I have to look for alternative components (lower cost but high quality).

I don't think you can beat the power combo price either but I did not need the ESC as I have one in the drawer so I am trying a rewound 4315 motor from Motrolfly, about the same weight as the Torque, rewound to 528 KV. I'm in no way a motor expert so I let someone with more knowledge handle that area. I love Torque motors, I have 4 or so flying my planes, but I also have Motrolfly and have found them very reliable. Steve,

Results
4315, 528Kv, 1.82A @ 22.64V

15x8 APC E, 22.20V, 8500 rpm, 73.36A, 1628 W, 170 oz. thrust (10.6 lbs.)

plenty of power for a 5 to 6 lb. plane.

This power setup could be used for the Edge 60" as well. I am using it on my SC 57.

Rimfire .55, 480kv with 6s-2650 30 C

APC 15x8, 22.8V, 50A, 1140 W, 165 oz static thrust (measured) --> 6.9 W/oz of thrust. I ran the test 3-4 times with similar result, and 165 oz is CRAZY power.

Data above: 1628 W, 170 oz --> 9.6 W/ oz of thrust ... does not seem to be very efficient. Is it tested data or estimated data?

My Castle 34-24-750 kv (251g, $40.00) with Blue Lipo 4s-4000 30C.

APC 15x8, 16.0V, 82A, 1312W, 180 oz static thrust (measured) --> 7.29 W/oz of thrust. The 6s power system should be more efficient than 4s, IMO.

To my knowledge it is tested data. Honestly though, I'm not looking to use 1600 watts on this aircraft, no way needed, but 1200-1300, without stressing the motor would be nice would'nt it? Now to get some batts that'll handle it. Hopefully Ken will see the thread and chime in.

I have an ICE75 waiting for the Edge, so the ESC from the power combo will probably go into something else.

I'm waiting for several results on rewound MotroFly 4315-4320... from 300 to 500 kV. I want to try one of these in my 3DHS Vyper.

I'd explore a rewound 3625, too. The -800 version has no trouble with 90A currents, so if Ken can wind a -500 that's good for about 60A peak, it should work well.

Yet another interesting option wold be a leftover Hyperion Z4020. They've been discontinued, but aircraft-world still has them, it sees.

Thats whats great about working with Ken. He's willing to try options. Plus his great customer service , willingness and speed at communicating back and forth. BTW I am in no way affiliated with Subsonic Planes. Good customer service is a plus and I just want it to be recognized.

Does anyone know if I can get Extreme Flight to charge my card now rather than when it ships? I'd like to pre-order a blue and yellow one, but I don't want it to charge me on the one day where I don't have the funds to cover it...if you know what I'm saying.

Ken's cs is the best. He made me a 4325-295 kv for my SC 72". That's a little monster. With the Hacker A50-14L, these are the best motors I have had.
I have no complaint about Motrolfly, but just listing some other options that work for the Edge 60".

450-500kv on 6s seems to be better for plane this size, IMO. 9.6 W/oz ... sounds like the motor suffers in term of efficiency.
In 3D flying, we shouldnt worry too much about efficiency, but 6.9 W/oz vs. 9.6 W/oz on the same prop (APC 15x8) and similar static thrust (165 oz vs. 170 oz) --> something might not be right.

The Scorpion S4020-484 kv (304g) would give you crazy power on 6s. APC 15x8 or 16x8.

Haha....it's too bad RC manufacturer's don't accept things like that as payment. "Yes, would consider taking my first born child?"
