1)Five screws hold the battery tray and everything else together, middle screw
is under the white seal.

2)It will all come apart at this point so don't lose any parts, and mind the
thermal grease.

3)Locate the power plug connections. (the two at the very back of the
connector.)

4)Use your expert soldering skills to connect red on the card slot side, and
the black on the battery pins side.

5)Using tin snips cut the square hole for the battery pins about 3mm longer
on the aluminum plate and bend it up to make room for your wires to go by.

6)At this point before you screw it together you going to want to check your
work by plugging in the a/c adapter, use a multimeter to check the voltage
and polarity 12.10v, red+, black- you know...

(WARNING: do not power up the board without it put together with the heat sink.)
Nice battery mod. I read somewhere (on another thread) the HP will shut down when the battery gets somewhere in the (lower?) 10v range...just something for us to be aware of. I take it if the Liberator is off there is NO residual drain on the LiPo. If this is correct, then you could leave the LiPo connected all the time and just charge it through the charge port? Any experience with that?

The balance plugs are polarized, make sure you have the polarity correct when you solder it up, I checked the four batteries I have with Thunderpower balance plugs... they were all the same. YMMV
Art,

Thanks for explaining... that all makes good sense.

Thanks,

Will for sure be doing Daydreams mod. Could I fit a 2200 battery in there easily? And that'd last me how long? -Tyler

Has anyone just done away with the liberator by hooking the power and video/audio directly into the unit? I have a set I just got from Dell that just quit working and I am pretty sure it is in the liberator. I was planning on sending it back but if someone has done that I might try it instead.

The HeadPlay support people said the problem was that I was trying to use the USB port and that I should get the compact flash card because it was faster. I tried that with the same result.

I think I might be getting the runaround. Any suggestions gentlemen?

I've played a bit playing videos on mine too, lots it doesn't seem to want to play. I've re-rendered some files in the H.264 iPod codec, seems to play all of those OK.

I pulled mine apart thinking about tapping into the power plug like daydream, but the area where the battery fits is so narrow none of my batteries will fit inside.

I had wondered about that same thing, if the goggles can accept A/V directly without the liberator.

I doubt that would work. To me, the Liberator looks essentially like a little PC, hence the menu structure, firmware, ability to us USB, etc. I'd be willing to bet they've made it such a proprietary unit that the goggles won't work without the Liberator. Bummer. For the price I got mine I can live with the Liberator...plus I have a Trimersion set as a back up. The Fatshark simplicity sure looks good...those are lower resolution, have (reported) blurring around the edges of the screen, and are 2x+ the price of what I paid for my HPs. Loosing the Liberator would be so, well, liberating!!!! Nothings perfect though, so we'll likely just have to live/work with the Liberator attached.

Great Question... If it were possible, to simply cut open the cable to the HP goggles, and supply power and composite video signal to the wires inside the goggle cable... that would make everything so much easier!

(And I'd be happy to toss the liberator box in the trash).

Anyone know if this can be done?

Thanks,
Kevin

Vantasstic,
There is residual drain when the headplay is off so you don't want to leave
the battery connected for too long. I was planing on popping the battery in
before heading for the field and pulling it out to charge after.

HeadPlay amp draw
off: 4.32mA - 231.5 hours on 1000mAh battery
on: 360-400mA - 2.5-2.8 hours on 1000mAh battery
depending on activity (higher with USP's or card)

flyboy321,
The zippy 2200mAh is too wide to fit with the cover closed. You could
rubber-band it like below, otherwise use a battery with dimensions less then...

H = 21.6mm
W = 59.7mm
L = 135.6mm

like
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=6790 ~3.25 hours of use
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=6539 ~4 hours of use

Thanks for the comments
Cory

Since it drains when it's not on, I guess I'll just use velcro on the battery to hold it in, that way I don't forget about it. Seems like a pain to have to unscrew every time I want to use it.

You don't have to unscrew it... You push in the tip of a pen on the front hole and just take the lid off.
