So I decided to try and improve on the rubber band idea. I used one of my wife's (shhhh...don't tell) hair ties instead of the rubber band. It's one of the really small diameter ones, is black, and should last a lot longer than a rubber band as well as be stronger. I got the front doors hooked up, works great. I'll try to post a picture if I can.

Here is what I got done today on the F18

Started the build today with my camera at hand.

What I got done today:
  • Glued nose cone on
  • Installed the nose wheel steering servo
  • Installed front retract
  • Setup up the push pull steering system
  • Installed the gear doors

Some tips/mods:
  • For the front retract unit I added some hot glue along with using the screws for a stronger hold.
  • On the front gear doors one of them has a little tab so that the other one will overlap it when closed, that was getting in the way of the retract so I shaved it off.
  • I just need to try on thing with the gear doors, there is two holes on the gear doors for a rubber band and I was using the top hole but I need to see if the bottom hole will give me different results.

Here is my Part 1 for the build and the picks are down below:

I have used something similar on other projects. It came from the local craft/sewing store. It was called elastic cord and came in 3 foot lengths for about $2. It was similar to a hair band but longer and thinner. Like the hair bands it's essentially a rubber band with a woven sleave outside. Low cost and will last much longer than a plain rubber band.

Got more done today.

This is what I got done today:
  • Wing servos installed along with control horns and rods
  • Added a Carbon fiber rod to the wing
  • Glued on the wings

The carbon fiber rod was 5mm in diameter (it is a hollow rod and I think it has a 2.5-3mm center) and 14in in length, slots were cut out using my dremel.

Great job on the Videos & Pics j3t! This will be a good reference for those of us who might have questions about the build! Little things like your steering servo placement will really save us some trail & error...thanks & keep up the good work!

Was going to work on the fuse a little more today but I ran into a dilemma, I need a reversed servo and some y connectors. Anybody know where I can get some?
