Wing roots fitted.

I have splooge filled and block sanded the roots of both fuselage and wings to provide a good fit. I used a .005 inch feeler guage to do the last sanding/filling. The final adjustment to the mating surfaces can be done with the primer/filler.

I've also started to shape the tapered cone and former for the pressure hose at the tail end of the fuselage. This tapered section is to support the aft end of the bladder where it is collapsed and crunched up on the hose. Details of this was provided courtesy of Adam of WWW on the inflation bladder thread. I have used it a couple of time.

This is an excellent thread!

Jim.

Looking forward to priming and surfacing soon!

Ready for first coat of primer!

The five part plug(s) are ready for first coat of primer. Then filling/sanding/priming etc. untill suitably surfaced up for final coat. I've decided on 2 pack. However, it will be over single pack acrylic primer, so I will be leaving the primer for at least a week and preferrably 10 days before painting with 2 pack. This is to allow most of the solvents to offgass and minimise any crazing and cracking in the final coat.

I'm trying to figure out a way to make and use one mould for both tail control surfaces. The main consideration is the position of the pins. If I could build the mould with pins in both positions, then it could be used for both tails.
Any suggestions?

I will wait for better weather before priming. In the meantime, I will get some other modelling chores under way. I need to do a stock take and order any necessary materials before the xmas break. I want to be in the shed during the week between xmas and New Year and don't want to suddenly run out of materials.
Also, I looking at the weather with view to making a road trip down to Wybung, which is about 5 hours south of where I am, for a fly later in the week.

Use 2k hi build primer as well. Always ends up in tears.
It will be worth it in the end.

Tim,

The wings already have many coats of acrylic 1k primer and filler.
However, I could still do the fuse with 2 k.
What do you use for filler in this case? 2k filler as well?

Dolphin glaze..

A lot of guys are using it , sands with NO effort, very quick drying , NO sink back etc etc.
I get it 10min from my house....if you can not get it close to you I'm happy to get some and send it to you.
It would be hard to find a better , easy to use product.

What are the compatibility factors Tim? Before and after I mean.
ie: will it go on epoxy fibreglass, acrylic filler/primer etc. and is 2 pack ok on top of it?

Plugs and parting boards.

I've been steadily working on surfacing up the plugs. Meanwhile, I did get the opportunity to go into our local Men's Shed to start work on the parting boards.
The pictures tell the story fairly well I hope!

Wing parting boards.

I framed up and cut out the parting boards for the wings today at our "Men's Shed".
I now have a the small challenge of building a tapered ramp up to the mid-line of the joiner and incidence pins. They are elevated up from the parting board due to the slight dihedral.

Any suggestions as to an easy way to do this?

I'm considering making a flat plane ramp the full width of the parting board with its height determined by the mid-line of the joiner and incidence pin. that will create a small step in the junction of this ramp and the main parting board at the line of the root of the wing. I don't see any problem with this yet, but will sleep on it.

More work on the fitting of the plugs to parting boards. Depth templates used to fit the wing plugs.
Sloped wood ramps to bring the parting board up to the mid-line of the joiner and incidence pins.

The red plastic strips on the wing parting boards are to create the channel that functions as a resin trap and fabric trim space. They are spline joiners for particle board flooring I think. I just planed the sides to form a positive draft angle.

Fibreglass sheet compared to wood for "Ramps".

I made the first parting board riser or ramp out of some shaped wood. This second wing I decided to try it with pre-made fibreglass sheet and pack it up to height. I had made the sheet yesterday with my first vacuum infusion test sample. See my blog for details.

Anyway, the glass sheet method is easier and quicker. Will require less, if any, surfacing which the wood will.

Final Pre-painting trial fit.

The priming is now finished and I did a final pre-painting fit up today.
The four flying surfaces fit nicely to the root stubs, so all's well so far.
I plan to let the primer cure over 7 to 10 days to make sure the solvent has flashed off fairly thoroughly before spray painting with 2 pack gloss black paint.

This marks one more major stage in the mould production finished!
