Yeah you can do all sorts of fun stuff with servos. with an external pot it's basically a gearbox thats controlled by the pot.

I saw something also where a guy put weights on the ends of his sweep wing, so when the wing moved back the CG did at the same time, then you don't need a fancy battery tray that moves or mixes or anything to correct the CG, it moves with the wings.

Bob did this on his profile B1, to test CG issues for his project. it worked out very well. I believe he used pennies, or nickels. LOL.

Just for the record. The Actuators I looked at are "closed loop". That means, the end-points are not adjustable. So if you "design" for max travel, you should be okay. The system has end-point overload protection, so if you hit the end-point, and power is still on, it will shut down, till you reverse.

The R/C connectors allow you to "turn on" the actuator (-ve to +ve signal) and the direction is controlled by the polarity of the power leads. pretty simple, no controller boards etc. You just have to figure out how to switch power polarity. Weight is pretty good too for R/C....

Anyway, all ideas for the swing wing mechanisms so far are good ones, sometimes, out of the box thinking is also good...

weight is a main concern for this smaller version. It is pure Depron so far, and I will weigh it later and post.

as far as I understand it, you still need a control board, to get it to function for RC use. they are RC compatible, but still need the controller board for that purpose, unless you can figure out another way to do it, as suggested. I've been on their website when I was looking to power my landing gear and this would have been a good solution, but too expensive with the controller boards for RC.

At a fun fly 12 years ago I met a bloke who did this on a prop-jet F-111. He used large washers and let them into the underside of sheet balsa wing tips. It worked quite well, and he only needed the slightest touch of elevator held in to fly straight and level with wings fully swept.

Yeah, i don't know where I saw it, but the guy said he didn't need to correct at all or mix or anything. I believe like the dude above said, he used washers. They were taped to the wing to start, then once he found a good amount of weight where NO correction or input was needed to maintain level flight while "wing sweeping" he just slit the balsa and pushed them in, glued it back up and covered it and looked normal.

Here are the wings. You just have to assemble the other one and sheet the tops. After you assemble the other panel, you need to put the wing on a drill press and drill out for the pivot. If you dont have a drillpress i will do it. Dont try by hand!

Box section spar


Top of Pivot. i did not glue this in so you can do whatever you see fit for the bearings etc. Need the drill press to bore the other one.


Bottom


No need for any ribs in front of the spar really, unless you want them. Tack glue the wing to the table so its held 100% flat and skin it with 2 or 3mm. All the parts are there for you to add to the plans

I will do the other spar then. That same method is used for the stab on the MD:

Fiberglass sheet/depron/fiberglass sheet sandwich. drill through it all and then add the carbon pivot tube.

the wing looks fantastic. are you using the same central spar/wing box as the full size does? sure looks like it to me. makes sense too, cause the full size is incredibly strong at a light weight. Bob built his 18 footer the same way and attached the flap tracks to the wing box, which I'm sure is also the same as full size.

are you going to use miniature bearings for the wing pivot, or are you going to use a slip fit pivot?................nothing a little white lythium grease wouldn't be able to handle.

I would assume thats how the real one was built, makes the most sense. My supremely logical Spok-like brain came up with it (at least logical towards building/engineering stuff)

The Russians were asked why the Buran looks almost identical to the Space Shuttle. They said that " solutions to the same problems look similar" or something like that. lol

The center wing joint will be... well think of an I beam with the web removed on both ends for the wing to fit into. Im going to do that tomorrow. Now that these wings are in front of me, I dont see any problems sweeping them with a std sized high torque servo.
