How many FPV pilots in the world?

I think I have seen a topic talking about this in the past, but what do people estimate the number is? This being people that regularly and successfully fly FPV as a hobby.

I am giving a really short presentation tomorrow for a technical communications class about FPV, and this would be an interesting number to present. Actually, it is so short (7 minutes) I think I will have trouble deciding what exactly to talk about.

Thanks for linking that. I saw it before but couldn't find it. You could probably almost call that all the FPV pilots in the English-speaking world.

This is a very good question. I think that it would be very hard to count how many of us are out there, but one thing is for sure, at least 5 to 10 rc pilots are getting into fpv every day ( that's just from rcg alone). And provably about 7% of all RC flyers. That's just counting all the rc guys I personally know vs. the ones that fly fpv.

This can actually be answered with a fair level of accuracy. If you find out how many members are in the AMA, then randomly select 50 of those members and see how many fly FPV; you should get a percentage. It's by no means a perfect way of finding out, but you'd have the most accurate number available.

Personally, at least here in Canada, there's no way 7% are FPV pilots. I only know 3 other guys out of ~100 fliers that fly FPV, and I've only met them BECAUSE OF FPV on the boards.

IMHO at least here in the west, I'd say it's closer to 3%. Might be higher elsewhere though.

I think way way more people want to get into FPV than are actually successfully
piloting their planes through a video link. It's certainly still a minuscule percentage
of total R/C aircraft flights. I think even 3% is way high, although there
are certainly small areas with concentrations of a few more here and there.
