If it actually happened, we have been known to get fed some "expanded truths"... I would lean more toward it being a gift than anything else. To what end, Who knows? but I can assure you it will cost us.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Remember the U-2 incident and the Pueblo.

I'll bet it didn't get shot down. It has to have the profile of a house fly on radar. If this is the one that went down. Who knows where they pulled that model shown from.

We had a U2 stop in for a 72 hour layover at Griffiss AFB (1973). It was under full military guard. We watched it take off though. Didn't know the wing wheels ejected on takoff being a rookie Airman 1st Class. Pretty cool..
U-2 Takeoff (0 min 19 sec)

The wing tips have a little metal bump for scraping along the ground. It's not a problem when landing, but on take-off you need one of the two: a wing wheel or a runner.

I bet when landing there was a lot less fuel in the wings also.. so didn't drop as much,, and I remember when flying full size sailplanes for taking off need a wing runner to hold it up for the first few feet till the ailerons would work,, But on landing you could hold it up till the last second and then it would drop as you stopped moving..
