okay, went to the pond, learned 3 things,
1: my toy rc is tough!, it got swamped 3 times and shorted out. dumped the water and it worked like nothing ever happened! (that is about the coolest thing yet)
2: i need rudder control. first off, its inverted, left is right and right is left, and it only does left or right, no center, expecpt when you are lucky.
3: the mast is too far forward. you can see the boat try to push its bow under as it going forward.
over all i am impressed. i am not a sailor, but i got this thing back to shore. it handles nice when it listens to me, and speed was never an issue. the wind was strong, but with better sails and better helm, i think it will do all right.
nemo.
p.s. i had a video, but it got screwed up, so no vid. next time guys.

thanks! i just rigged it for night running, two 'wheat' bulbs wired in series, about 40 mah draw total. kinda dim but i wanted that effect, makes it look more "real". i have moded it to have center return on the rudder and rudder is now correct. moved the sail back about an inch. have not sailed it yet.

learned a few things here.
one, the boat does not sink, even when the deck is level with the water.
two, my sails suck, they work better one way than the other, because of how i rigged it.
three, nine inch hulls are tricky. this one was loaded too much, and sank.
four, the boat heel sideways when the sails are not right, and not so much when the sail are good

pretty cool, other wise.

next vid is of the sinking, raw footage.

Your boat did a nice beach landing with the sail functioning all the way thru. Pack it with white foam inside a ziploc bag / foam never gets wet. You can use saran rap if applied proper it should last. Add more ballast to the keel, improve your sails size shape and cup for big windy day power you should be able to fly over those humps of watah if you move your cg back its too forward you nosed in as the water consumed ; but great ol wood to the rescue! I prefer wood over any other product when scratch building.

nemoskull,

Your mast may not be too far forward - as you suspect.
It is very likely that it is simply too stiff !

Look at the Footy class yachts - which should fit into a 12" x 12" x 6" box.

Due to their small size - they 'blow over' very easily - so 'new' rigs have been developed - where the mast is able to bend.
Yes - you read correctly !

A 'bendable' mast allows a rig to loose some power during a gust - and so a little model can carry on it's course without much deviation...

Keven.
