Those were used by WW2 German Tankers. They could stick the barrel out the hatch and shoot the enemy trying to get on the tank. The people trying to get on the tank ( to drop a couple of grenades in) were too close to use the main machine gun on. The gun did work but the bullet velocity was reduced.

When they started suspecting they might have a big fish in the pond, probably Himmler himself,
And on the question of the officer in charge: did you check his mouth ?
he crushed a cyanide capsule he had hidden in there.

The end came quick, and he would never stand trial...
