+1, wifi less mod is THE way to go...
Or, as mentionned in the beginning of this thread, you can use :
- Arduino UNO
- Aynclabs WiShield
But, I warn you, i didn't manage to find the wishield...

Well, I jumped the gun and ordered the Arduino UNO and LinkSprite CuHead WiFi Shield. Recommended as a replacement for YellowJacket 1.0.

However, the wifi-less solution is probably the better approach.

Since I fly rc helicopters, I have the transmitter and spare receivers to implement.

Thank you for the pointer.

Yes, ultimately I want to move the brain of the Ar.Drone to another quadcopter. So it would be good if a converter is availble between the Ar.Drone board and a notmal ESC.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1399162

I already asked TIMECOP to make a i2c converter for the AR Drone. The more that ask the better.

By the way the Drone flies well with the conversion. I added a magnet to the AR.D that hangs below about a foot so I can pickup metal and move it from place to place. The electric magnet turned on and off with the 6th ch so I can pickup and drop. I just use a small brushed ESC as a switch. Kind of a fun game and very challenging.

Many thanks for taking the time to feedback Laurent. I will amend post #2 with your feedback and attach the V2.1.2 firmware. ( When I have a chance )

I would like to help further candidates for this mod by pointing out a small uncertainty in the Mod...
For the one using sketch 2.1.2, read the following :

In the procedure described in post #2 Post #2 there is a parameter which is no more in accordance with the user_config.h of sketch version 2.1.2
Frankly, it's very simple but it can be a bit confusing for a newbee.
In fact, there is a confusion on the "WIFI_DISABLE" #define.

In the procedure, chapter 9, you mention :

9) Config YJ to talk to Ar.Drone

Back to the Arduino IDE. We need to edit the "user_config.h" file. Do not touch the other 2 files.

Click on the "user_config.h" tab and change the following from

#define PRINT_DEBUG 1 // En/Disable debug
#define WIFI_DISABLE 1 // En/Disable WiFI to test radio

to

#define PRINT_DEBUG 0 // En/Disable debug
#define WIFI_DISABLE 0 // En/Disable WiFI to test radio

so it means, that, when the setting of the YJ is ready, and when the AR.Drone firmware has been modified, it's now time to fly with the drone, then WIFI_DISABLE must be set to 0. Which means that WIFI will be enabled...

BUT, in the sketch 2.1.2, to enable or disable wifi you just need to uncomment or comment the #define WIFI_ENABLE
So, when it's time to fly with the drone, WIFI_ENABLE must be uncomment.

Her we are, this not very complicated, but again, for a newbee, it could be confusing...

I hope it helps...

Regards

If you can upgrade an ESC firmware , then you should not have any problem uploading the firmware to the YJ. But, as the YJ is now hard to find, you might have a look at the nosaari's wifi less mod.

To pick up the channel signals on the RX, i used only two servo connectors plugged horizontally, thus, it was very straightforward to inject on the YJ the five channels of my AR6100e

tomorrow, it will fly with my DX7 transmitter...

Thank's a lot Mheeli !!!

I could not see that RX in the thread you mentioned. Can you let me know which post? The information required is the sequence of the pulse.

For the Spektrum RX I'm using the pulse output sequence is

roll
pitch
throttle
yaw
aux

That is bad news.

But all is not lost.

Please have a look at nosaari's wifi less for an alternative and cheaper mod.

I think WiFi less is more stable. So I'm in the progress of converting the YJ to a Wifi less mod, since I already have the YJ. I will be posting instructions when done, so people with YJ mod has an option to go WiFi less with no additional cost.

The End of the Journey

As I'm sure that most people have figured out, things are changing at AsyncLabs.  So instead of beating around the bush, I'll just come out and say it.  After much consideration and thought, AsyncLabs will be shutting it's doors.  A lot of it boils down to just not having enough time to really devote to AsyncLabs, and what it takes to continue innovating future products for the community.  It's something that has been brewing for the past few months, and it's best that we let everybody know instead of just keeping everybody on edge, hoping that we will come out with some more WiShield, BlackWidow, and YellowJacket parts soon.
The website wiki and forums will remain up for the foreseeable future, to help those that would like to use our designs to make parts for themselves.  All the parts are still available (the WiFi module is available from Microchip), so there should still be an avenue for people to add WiFi to their designs.
I want to personally thank everybody for the wonderful experience, and the ability to provide a unique part to the community.  It really is a part that is desperately needed, and I hope that somebody picks up the torch where we left off.  I have no doubt that somebody will make products vastly superior to ours.
I'm sure that at some point in the future I'll be back at this again, tinkering my way to something else interesting, but for now, my family needs some of my attention (as well as my day employer ).

There is a converter available. I have the ST version for a hexa build. I'll use the MK FC and the Afro board to convert the I2C to regular ESC's signals.

i have done the bearing mod on my drone and i must say it is much better.
i could not get the 2x5x2 bearings but i did put in the 2x5x2.5 bearings.
it require a bit of filing on the gear and propeller to be able to put the clip on the shaft or one can just make a shaft that is 0.5mm longer.

Looks awesome! Can I do the same thing to fly it with my Walkera 2801 tx? How much did you spend to convert?

Superb video. Good idea mouting the camera on your head.

Very nice controlled flight. Now imagine 2 drones racing around those columns. It will be so fun.

It's been windy here in Bangkok, so not much flying me.

Had the Drone out for a flight the other night. I went back to my AR6200 rx and had no yaw issues. The motors did surge some but it may have been related to the wind. At the last, I lost control on the right stick, didn't respond. I was able to land and tried again and it worked. No big deal. I'm still running 2.0.

Your drone still going strong? Any parts replacement?

I thought you'd have moved to WiFi less mod.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!. The YJ is working good and it's good enough for line of sight flying. The wifi-less mod is interesting but it's still limited to line of sight flying. Adding FPV gear makes it less stable, which is better suited for a proper quad for lifting gear. I haven't changed anything on the Drone yet. One of the lucky ones but it helps if you don't push it too hard and don't crash. I had my MK quad out for a FPV test flight the other night. I'll post a link when the video is uploaded.

We are spoiled at our field. Only 10 members and the farmer cuts and maintains it for us. We did have sod all around us for the last few years but the farmer is going back to cash crops and plowed it in. It was nice to have the extra grass though.

Here's the MK video. I got out to about 120m before some interference in my googles. My DVR recorded a good image though. I'm going to try a different pair of googles to see if it makes a difference.

Hello there,

I have a few questions:

1) Has anyone tested Mheeli's WiFi Mod with an AR.Drone 2.0 yet?

2) This new ruggedcircuits yellowjacket board (http://ruggedcircuits.com/html/yellowjacket.html) has 802.11 b/g/n capabilities. Has anyone tried this out yet? Is it still needed to telnet to the drone and change the config file in order to force the drone to connect to a at 2Mbit/s signal?

3) I wonder if the Mod can me modified to use the PPM output (sum-signal) of a RC receiver. Most copter projects use a RC receiver which is only connected via a single servo cable to the flight control board. This would make things even easier, smaller and lighter. e.g. I use a Jeti receiver like this on my other copters:

4) This tread is rather old. Is there a newer (and possibly) better mod? Is GPS return to home and stuff like this possible yet?

Best regards
Thomas

I have got to tell ya. I have had my Drone 2.0 for two weeks now and this is the neatest thing I bought in a long time. Everyone and I mean everyone that watches it in action loves it. Guys at my flying field were ordering it on their phones as I was flying it. This is going to get really good. I can see 10 flying at the same time.

Question about extending flight distance on Parrot AR

I'm new to quadrotors, so please forgive me if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about, as I'm trying to learn.

I want to extend the flight distance of my Parrot AR, maybe up to 500 meters, and came across this:
AR.Drone + iP4 + PowerAP N Ultra Long Range - 500m+ (TEST) (4 min 22 sec)

and this:
http://dronehacks.com/2011/08/21/ar-...-5-kilometers/

What equipment would I need to make this possible? Or at least to test if it would work?

From reading elsewhere, it seems maybe a radio-control 2.4GHz receiver, a Yellowjacket for the WiFi, a Ubiquiti PowerAP N router for the distance, and a controller. Am I missing something, or confusing various methods of remote control?

Any help appreciated.

Why a BEC?

I'm in the process of building this mod and am awaiting the Yellow Jacket.

I've been reading all I can find about this and cannot see any discussions or suggestion as to why you must use a BEC? Unfortunately I ordered the YJ and then a couple of hours later saw the Serial/USB mod. Oh well, may be later....

I am thinking of powering the YJ via the RAW port directly from the AR Drone battery via a Y splice cable I'll make up.

From http://ruggedcircuits.com/html/yello...t.html#PowerIn I can see that the RAW port can take 7V-24VDC.

And from http://ruggedcircuits.com/html/yello....html#PowerOut I can source 5V for the AR6100e.

Am I (as an RC and Arduino noob) missing something here or has no one realised you can power the Arduino/YJ directly?

I am trying to use Mheeli's code and instructions with the ar drone 2.0 and the rugged circuits yellow jacket and the wifi isn't connecting, as far as I can tell. I could really use some help, getting a bit frustrated here, (I am using this set up for a school project and need to have it connected and at least take/off land by Tuesday. Since I can't seem to figure out if I am actually paired with the drone or not at this point I'm pulling my hair out!).

I am using the old arduino version 0020 and Mheeli's code. It is uploaded and running. I am showing that the wifi is running on the yellowjacket but the drone just sits there like a lump on a log with no indication that it is doing anything. I know I am sending commands at it. I did do the edit to add the 2mbs connection to the drone. I am using the libraries and code supplied.

Trying to make sure I get all the information needed but it seems I am missing quite a bit. If somebody is willing to lend a hand I'll post the code.

Thanks!

I ended up clearing code and re-wrote from scratch using a UDPApp type project. With this I was able to get my YellowJacket to connect and control the AR Drone 2. I'd be happy to upload/share more notes if anybody is interested.

For anyone wanting to go up to 300 feet high and 1,400 feet away. Get a TP-Link Range Extender it is a TL-WA830RE. Go to YouTube to see them work. All you do is turn on Ar.Drone then turn on Range extender and push Range Extender button on bottom right (Green). Once it hooks up turn on IPad, Iphone or clone and hook up to Ar.Drone, very simple. I hooked a Lipo 11.1 battery to the range Extender and it is very portable. Works great go to Amazon to buy. Also pick up a low battery alarm to monitor the 11.1 Lipo battery.
