There isn't a lot of clearance below the drone and keeping it on the center of gravity may be difficult because of the location of the camera and ultrasonic sensors. The bottom mounted position also puts a rather pricey device right in harms way. When my drone lands it seems just short of a controlled crash. The GoPro's extra weight would probably make the touch down even harder.

In the long run I think we will see a family of drones that evolve from this basic platform with better cameras, longer range, better station holding ability possibly augmented by GPS and longer flight times. I like to think of this as every man's access to aerial photography. Of course all of this is already being done with military UAVs.

I realize that it is different than tilting the iDevice but it seems like it would be more precise also.

OBTW I'm 60 and not yet thinking of myself as an "old folk".
It was just my attempt at humor The work is boring, so I need some escape.

My original goal for the conversion was to be able to control from my Spektrum. I was only flying around in my garden.

But, once I took it out to local footbal field, I enjoyed it more. And the range benefit was apparent.

Sorry to hear. My day job is anything but. In fact my boss is very interested in this project because he has a drone also. I also am very appreciative of your work on this. Thanks! Hope that I can become a contributor also.

You might fly better with an iDevice. Not like us old folks, we are used to the Sticks !!!
Thanks for the heads up Mheeli; I definitely want to have better range capabilities and will probably mess around with it with the idevice as I slowly start collecting the RC gear necessary. I know a few folks here locally in NY that may have surplus gear and might be willing to part with some of it which should help my cause.

Hi Mheeli,

Would a 3.3v version of the breakout board work?
http://www.robotshop.com/sfe-lilypad...-mini-b-6.html

How about this one?
DFRobot FTDI USB to Serial Basic Breakout Board (3.3V / 5V)
http://www.robotshop.com/dfrobot-ftd...t-board-4.html

I only have access to these ones to program the YJ. Thanks.

Most FTDI breakout boards should work. Just make sure it's 5V.

The ones being sold by Asynclabs is actually made by Sparkfun as mentioned by Matte.

Large motors

Mheeli

Thank you for reply. Are you still going to try larger motors for the AR Drone. Would you be able to change PID settings to fine tune the flight controller for different motors?
Do you know how the AR Drone motors are controlled PWM, i2c or serial? I just bought an AR Drone off of ebay and I will convert it to RC. I would not have been interested in it without your conversion.

Thank you
Larry

Can anyone help me with replacing the bushings with bearings?

I've heard that frictionless bearings work wonders for the AR.Drone.

I'm looking at these: http://www.xheli.com/ek1-0430.html

Can anyone confirm that these will be a direct replacement?

Thanks

Those bearings will work fine. I bought the same ones, enough for an extra set. I was using them in my rc video. The sound was different then the stock bushings.

2 mm x 5 mm x 2 mm is the nearest correct size but sealed/covered bearings might be better.
