CA hinges are a laminated plastic and fabric piece that is inserted in slots in the control surfaces. When you put CA on it, the thin CA wicks into the wood and the fabric. It remains flexible but glued tot he wood. I don't like these hinges very much on larger models because they are kind of hard to move when lots of deflection is needed. But on a small model like this where the control surfaces are thin, they are easily installed and can be made narrow so it is not that hard to flex.

Made the other wing this morning. The first one I trimmed the ends of the stringers, leading edge and spar. Will be back Sunday to continue the build. Now it is going to be finishing job. Should go well, the plane is small .
Played with the finished parts I had and layed them together to look at what the finished plane will look. I do this with every build, trying toi visualise the finished bird. Never tire of it

All major parts built

Hi all ! I finished all the frame components except the wing struts. Weight is 2.4 oz or 68 grams with battery, servos and receiver. I am now sure that with the struts, motor, esc and covering I will be below 5 oz and maybe between 4 and 4.5 oz.

I made an metal elevator joiner to add strenght to the wood between both elevators and rounded the leading edge of all flying surfaces. I didn't bevel the leading edge of the control surfaces yet as I want to make the slots for the hinges first. I will add some sheeting to the hood in front of the cabin and to the firewall as it needs correction beeing a little crooked. Wings are not yet sanded but all else is.

Could anyone give me somme clue about down and right thrust for this plane ? Nothing is stated in the manual or on the plan (or I didn't see it...)

Please feel free to comment on the build and thanks for reading and watching the pics !

A couple degrees of right, and a couple degrees of down should be plenty.

Sanded the wings tonight, leading edge came out great. With the small size of the plane, at least there is not a lot of balsa dust to vacuum

Had some nice shop time tonight. Built the wing struts (forgot the waxed paper, glued the struts to the plan don't do that if you want to see your drawings again...).

Also made some small CA hinges from a regular size one. Cut the corners so they would be easier to put in the slits I made in the elevator and rudder. Was afraid of making the slits since the wood parts are so delicate and small but all went well with a fresh blade. Also put a hinge in the bottom of the rudder where it meets the fuselage so the rudder is stronger (push rod will be on bottom of rudder and I don't want it to flex side ways with servo push or pull). I also beveled the leading edge of the rudder and elevator to ease deflection. Nothing is glued yet, I will glue the hinges after covering
(you didn't tought I had glued them yet did you ? )

Hood, cowl ring and firewall

Got time for a little work tonight: I installed a cowl ring made with balsa to help attach and solidify the cowl. I used 1/16 and 1/32 balsa laminated cross grain to each other. I glued it with medium CA from the front of the cowl, letting the CA drip by the holes. I added magnets and added some thin CA to the wood to glue the magnets and solidify the balsa.

I didn't like the look of the model's front end on some pics where you can see all the stringers on the hood (between fiwall and windshield) through the covering. I find it also make the covering sag and dosn't give a nice shape. I added 1/32 balsa to remedy this. I damped it with alcool to help the wood bend over the curve without breaking.

My firewall was a little crooked and didn't look to robust, so I laminated a new1/16 balsa firewall shimmed with some 1/32 balsa. After sanding, the firewall front end is now perpendicular to the fuselage. It will also help to retain the motor without breaking.

Hope you like the build so far. Feel free to comment or point out mistakes if you see some.

I bought mine BNF and didn't have problem binding it to my DX7, but sometimes it takes several seconds to bind.
