a fantail launch in Italy

After a long waiting, finally, I decided to have a try with steam; more than two years ago i bought the Fantail launch ll and the Heritage engine, I liked their simple shapes, they looked absolutely right to me, a newcomer to this world and , in particular, I was amazed by their prices.

After having got the parcel, I left the models on the shelves, waiting for the right moment to start a new project; little by little dust covered them until a couple of weeks ago when the right sparkle arrived and here I am, to share with you the birth of a new boat and to look for help.

Well, I started to remove burrs from the engine case and to oil all the moving parts, I was pleased to see that the whole system moved smoothly and free.
It was time to think about the fuel: sterno is not available in Italy but I found a similar one, a white gel called BBQ, they sell it for barbecues and fireplaces, the smell is not real the very best but it works.
So, I stained and made waterproof the wooden base , added an additional, smaller and lower row of holes to the furnace wall and assembled all together.

Then I filled the fuel pot ( the original one which comes with the engine) with the gel and started the fire under the boiler, after 5 minutes, a little turn to the flywheel and the engine started and ran, consistently and without stops, for about 15 minutes.

EVVIVA!!! My first steam engine works…great, I love it!!!
I have not yet painted the case of the engine because I am not sure about the right type of paint I need, are the enamels used in plastic kit modeling suitable, may be acrylics? I would not spoil my engine with a poor paint job which after a couple of runs would look scratched and chipped; any suggestion will be welcome.
At the moment I am building the boat, I am happy of what I got from Midwest so far, parts fit easily and correctly and work is in progress as you can see

Well that’s all folks for now…

Sergio, nice job! Your engine runs sweet!

The only paint suitable is automotive engine enamel. Other paints won't last because of the heat, oil, and steam.

Good luck with your build. There are a number of build threads of this launch+engine combo, so it's interesting to compare the different approaches.

a couple of pics to show you the present status of Esmeralda...
yes, Esmeralda, this is the name I have chosen for my launch, hope you like it.
Once again I have no complaints or any major problem to report, things run smooth so far; the only modification I added is an alluminium pipe, running from frame F2 to frame F4 which will support and protect electric cable connecting battery to the RX.

That's all folks, ciao!

I haven't seen it listed on Midwest's site for a while, so it maybe just whatever dealers have in stock.
Regards,
Gerald.
