White Cliffs of Dover

Had a great view of them a week ago Wednesday from a window seat in an Airbus A340-300. They are WHITE and unmistakable even from 36,000 feet MSL! I'd guess that since they face the channel from the east side of England the wind is probably the wrong direction most of the time.

While visiting Cwmbran and Cardiff last month, I found the prevailing winds to West or SouthWest,....good for a round at the Celtic Manor. I had an opportunity to visit a company in St. Leonard by the Sea but ran out of time (4 day work weeks). They are near Hastings, which is close to Dover and would have answered the prevailing wind question.

Maybe one of our UK Locals could let us know what conditions/time of year would support a SouthEast flow for sloping Dover

Try Cap Blanc Nez across from Dover on the French side. It's the same chalk formation as the cliffs near Dover. Best of all it faces the right direction.

Is it really all just chalk? Also how tall are the dover cliffs I wonder? I'd love to do a running backflip off of em and base jump (assuming the parachute would open)

I'm so happy right now, I just revived my E-flite 10amp esc (originally set aside as a bec for a glider) woohoo! Let's go 3D foamies!

E-flite you've got a good name with me

Also there's been some crazy west winds here in erie (forming waterspouts!!!) But the best slope that I have requires a north wind too bad

Yes GreenAce, I've flown the range of cliffs.

300ft sheer drop, nasty rotor at the top. They are chalk, and unfortunately because of the our frontal weather systems you can't really predict when the wind will be good. Better still is Beachy Head, a reknowned suicide spot further down the coast. Higher and kinder for landing details here.

Here's a movie from some of the guys that fly there, you can see how the hill drops away smoothly before the lower cliff edge.....
