WARNING- I would not use the SX motor on a ultra micro with a 5043 and Hyperion G3 160s!

I was messing with one of my planes last night and the lvc cutoff started right away. I thought, huh, I thought this was charged already. Put it on the charger and tried it again later...same thing.

Then I examined the lipo. It is TOTALLY PUFFED! This setup must exceed the lipos capacity/rating. Out of my 6 Hyperion G3s, two of them are puffed and unusable. So bummed...

I have some bare Hyperion 180s...I should have used those from the get go...

Ugh...

Pete,

Are you sure it was the batt?

Did the motor get hot?

I ask, because I fly my SX/5043 4-site with TP 160s all the time.
The Hyp 160 is a better cell...

That's interesting because technically, the Hyp 160 can provide 4amps... If really the motor with that prop would draw that much and more, I suspect the internal ESC would have blown up, or at least went into safety mode.

Somehow, I would suspect an intermittent short, probably were the battery wires are soldered to the board. I know there's a decent spacing there (capacitor), but who knows, maybe a few stranded loose wires? Just saying that because techinically, the highest load is simply holding the prop while still throttleling up. And that should not puff the battery since the ESC should go in safe mode.

I guess the next step would be to put a wattmeter on your setup and see what's happening. Sure enough, I'm expecting high currents, but still below 4 amps

Hi Guys,

Good input, I'll have to check it out. I checked the motors and gearboxes carefully when I installed everything...

Hmmm...maybe I got a couple bad Hyperions?!

There were some bad 160s a while ago.

I ordered an SX motor from Roger to replace a stock HH motor and now my 4-Site has more than enough power. I flew it in the gym and it was just too fast for me to open her up in level flight. It was surprising when I found that what I thought was full throttle was only 3/4 throttle, but that makes sense since the SX motor puts out 25% more power over stock.

I have to add that I came to Roger with a problem of mine. The motor that I had ordered would be needed for me to attend the largest modeling show in my state. Roger got the motors, quickly soldered mine up, and sent it off ASA[humanly]P. The motor arrived today and the event is tomorrow.

Leave it to Roger to make things happen like that. What a great guy!

I experienced the same problem with the LVC, but I'm running the stock prop and Hyperion 180s. My crash over some bleachers resulted in a completely cracked fuselage support (45* bracing down side of fuse) and wing/fuse contacts.

Do people usually get soft LVC before hard LVC or are you guys just timing your flights?

Always timing, but every now and then, I forget to start the time on my DX7 (wish I had a DX8!) and when this happen, I usually eyeball it, or worst case get soft LVC.

so i bought an MCPX today - hardly flown so far - BUT I was really tempted to buy another motor to try in an modified PZ gear box - I didnt because i had already spend enough money lol.

this motor has strong magnets.

i really want to know what its like in a modified pz gear box with 9 tooth pinion, and 5043 prop.

could be good - heavier, but hopefully a lot more thrust

Didel pinion

The quality is excellent. Very clean.
Using my pocket drill, I enlarged the center hole with a .94mm bit.
It was a precise press fit on the motor shaft. (No ca used yet.)
Mounted the motor/9T nylon pinion assembly in a stock 4-site gear box.
The gear mesh was perfect.

I also mounted the same motor/nylon gear combo in TODD's BB gear box that he sent me. They are a work of art.
See his blog for more details:

Once again the gear mesh was perfect.

As soon as more SX motors arrive; I'll be installing the BB GB/SX motor with 9T Didel nylon pinion assembly in my Sukhoi for some fun testing. I'll bet the RPMs with Hyp 180s/240s will be very impressive.

rc
Roger,

Any further reports on the performance of these pinions ?

Thanks

Graham

Well I think I got a couple bad Hyperion 160s...

I flew my SX UM T-28 today trying to "tax" the Hyperion. Long full throttle application.

The lipo came down normal temperature and even after a 4 minute flight, full throttle was still not hitting lvc.

Hmmm...wondering if Hyperion would do an exchange?! I've never abused them...always charge on the Celectra charger (which I think is 1C but Hyperion claims higher C capable charging anyways), timed flights. I had 6 of them and marked them so I was always using them evenly.

So 2 of the 6 are no longer usable, but the remaining 4 seem okay.

160 and 240 cells comparison

got some figures comparing performance of clear/black/grey/white/p47-standard brass bushings gb, with 160 and 240 cells here:

more figures with Todd's ball bearings gb

did more tests with Todd's gear box with ball bearings on clear/black/grey/white motors. they confirm that, as we expected, there is less friction and there is a gain in rpm's, without increase of v/a/w.
for figures, get in here:
