Are you sure your $11 caliper is accurate enough???

Seriously though, here's a decent trick I've learned from an old engineer. Before mesuring anything, he would always pick up a sheet of paper from a ream of 500 he had on his desk. He knew it was 20lb paper so the average thickness was 0.097mm. He would mesure the sheet, which would give him a quick idea if the caliper was still ok. Then, he would lightly pull the sheet slowly, literally wiping the caliper to make sure there was not anything left over from a previous mesurement. Close it back, then check the zero. And only then, mesure something! If you have 24lb paper available, then it's 0.12mm (even better). Sure enough, a sheet of paper is not a true calibration standard, but you should be very close (otherwise, your 500 sheet packages would simply not fit in the boxes, or in the printers trays). And wiping the caliper is not a bad idea either, particularly if you could have picked up grease, or any dirt from something else before.

From there, you can also do two things:

Pick up 10 sheets of standard 20lbs paper and you should get very close to 1mm. (10 sheets would be 0.97mm, but getting 1mm is pretty much normal)

Pick up a random bunch of sheets, mesure it, then divide my 0.097mm) and you should get the exact number of sheet you picked up.

Not that I'm thinking your $11 caliper is bad and mine is better... I didn't spent much on it either!

Back to the thread: Definitively look like I may install a motor in my original Sukhoi very soon, and I have a friend who has a Mustang who could get my second one soon.

My $11 Cen-Tech caliper says: "accuracy of +/- 0.001" (0.03mm)"

Surely they wouldn't lie to me!

Even worse, my brother bought it and gave it to me!

My actual total cost was $40 gas money to his home.

My $40 Cen-Tech is extremely accurate!





Another tip:

Use a small pin to spread the J-B Weld on the inside hole of the pinion...After you drill it out with a #62 bit.

I've installed one of my SP motor in my old Sukhoi (the noisy motor I got out of two of them)... Sadly though, it's not the plane I fly the most, and sure enough, as you said, weather is very SO-SO... So it will take a while before I truly rake a lot of fligths on it.

Weather wise, I went flying my XP earlier yesterday... Very gray sky, but almost no wind. First battery went fine. 20 second into the next battery, the sky opened without warning. I'm not talking drizzle here... One second nothing, next you're totally wet by the time you pack your things. So that's why I went home and decided to swap the motor on my old Sukhoi. I basically had nothing better to do.

BTW: I had felt the power wasn't there anymore, but it was still flying quite well. Pulled the old motor and tested it: it was getting very hot. So this thing was probably drawing more than 2 amps on it's own. Yeah for Hyperions.

If it wasn't for Hyperions, I wouldn't be flying ultra-micros!

about the brushes, if any, i can't see them. how are the brushes placed? are they at 90 degrees to the rotor, or inclined?
meaning, are oriented in certain way that do better if turning on the way they do, so if reversing rotation they will not be so efficient?
if brushed, have you tested it for timing?

if rotating the other way (like on a pusher), do the brushes work fine? i can't see exactly how they fit, that's why i ask. still, for what i can see, i think that the springs are made for the motor to turn on certain direction, and not the other way. just an impression.

It's been raining here since Saturday. 50 MPH winds w/driving rain today. At least if it wasn't raining, I could fly my carbon fiber stunt-kite that's designed for extreme winds. Just got my big shortwave transmitting antenna up for my Amateur Radio station (another expensive hobby of mine). Wasn't planning on a wind-test so soon. Hope the antenna survives...

perhaps because i have spent the past 20 years here, i can tell you about weather.
the place where i live is called 'The City of Windsor', but i think the name is missing something: i think it should be called "The City of Winds-or Storms'.
we have the most fantastic array of winds, turbulence, storms, rain, hail, snow, ice, thunder, lightning, fast moving fronts (am missing something?) that anybody could dream of. sometimes i can't fly for over a month. then we have several days of great weather-the kind i like: no wind! but then i get so tired, flying every day...on the bright side, it gives more time to design, build, get into the net and find out about all the terrific things all you great guys are doing.
and it may help us to appreciate more the good weather when it happens.

i think it will be great if we bring data regarding not only the solo pro, but the other motors that are similar, like the clear and black end bell, the msr and whatever, in the 8.5mm class, so we can compare them.
by the way, just as the solo pro is being called SP, perhaps could save time typing if we call the clear and black end bell C and B

and of course: mSR
