Alert
LA no fly zone for 10/22/10

For those who were thinking of flying in the LA area this Friday, forget about it. Just received this in my email from the AMA. 35nm circle is over 12,000 square miles of area around LA. It covers from Newport Beach to Oxnard from the coast to Palmdale. I suspect the President is on a campaign trip of the west coast as Seattle and Portland are also mentioned in the TFR. The links appear to not have copied over from my email. So here are the links mentioned http://02b954f.netsolhost.com/amatfr3.html and http://www.modelaircraft.org/members...bs/notams.aspx

This website allows you to see the current TFRs on an FAA VFR chart, a normal map, and a photo base map. Makes it very easy to see where the limits are compared to your location.

At least it is only Friday and only from 10:30 am to 5 pm

Well unless you are some sort of welfare queen shouldn't all good Red-blooded Amurikans be working on Friday??

But these are now a fact of life in our post 9-11 world.

Well, technically you cannot fly models within the area of the TFR between 10:30 and 4:59 on Friday.

Here's the FAA link: http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_0_1912.html

From the TFR:

Quote:
C. The following operations are not authorized within this TFR: flight training, practice instrument approaches, aerobatic flight, glider operations, seaplane operations, parachute operations, ultralight, hang gliding, balloon operations, agriculture/crop dusting, animal population control flight operations, banner towing operations, sightseeing operations, maintenance test flights, model aircraft operations, model rocketry, and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
And like I've noted, the Runwayfinder site is a cool tool to see where the TFR is on a satellite map or regular map, as well as a VFR sectional

http://www.runwayfinder.com

Corona is just outside the TFR area. It sweeps across the west end of the runways at CNO however. Temple is well within the limits.

I doubt they are specifically looking for us, but should they see us it would look pretty bad since we are trying to sell the FAA on the idea that we are a responsible group of hobbyists and such. So flagrantly flaunting a TFR might not be in our collective best interest right now.

+1

I'm not saying it's OK, but sloping down on a lip slope would be a whole lot more "under the radar" than flying a TD plane up at 1000-1500' AGL....

Target, I was thinking the same thing... flying a slope toy (your Cyril) on a remote slope, low level, away from everyone... we all know doesn't pose a huge threat to our president. And I doubt the toy airplane police would really be looking for me at Temple... But... as a commercial pilot, if I get busted for flying models in the middle of a TFR area... yeah... probably not a good thing... soooooo... another opportunity missed... And also, like Bill says... probably not in our collective best interest.

My experience with the FAA is that they like the airways to be used by commerial and general aviation only. In fact, GA only lives because most of it occurs below 18,000 ft. The FAA is a VERY high inertia government agency.

FWIW the AMA is working with the FAA/DHS to see if we can get these TFRs changed a bit to more realistically reflect the potential security risk posed by model aviation. It has not happened yet, but sooner or later one is going to affect a major contest or such and that is one thing the AMA is trying to avoid.
