It was a moderate pullout from a moderately high speed dive, but that was AFTER having some full-throw & TV flipping fun for the better part of a battery. Always possible that my setup was bad or that I weakened something during the acrobatics, I was pretty new to EDFs and TV at the time. But I have been a bit nervious about these foam & pivot mounted control surfaces ever since.

I guess it pays off to beef up the attachment points with some epoxy. The actual components seem to be strong enough.

The Freewing hinges are worth a look as well. Some are less well glued in than others. The elevator was about to fall off my F-35. I caught it in time.

Worked for me too, probably should move it back some more, it dives in the turns. Does fly well and has OK thrust and speed. Pretty good for out of the box stock.

The only thing about the CG is that on grass, you'll burn up a lot of runway getting to rotation speed. I've moved back my 6S 4000 battery some but I'll probably move it back some more.
I've got a couple of other ideas too.

I got my f18 some time ago, buts its still in the box. Before its a kit and before I build it I wanted to ask if any one has made any reinforcements to the wings. I have seen on videos some flex from the wings and I think some one here had a wing failure.

Think I added and extra carbon strip/rod forward of the existing carbon tube. However I didn't do it to my current FA18E.

NEED HELP...

Hi Ya, I recieved my freewing f-18 yesterday. After assembling, uprading the landing gears, and putting in a 5300 mah Gen Ace battery, this plane turns out to be a race car. Is my bird too heavy to fly? Will a 12 blade Changsun EDF unit with the stock freewing motor and a 100amp Turnigy ESC solve my issue? Should I go back to stock freewing landing gears? Before I put back the stock freewing landing gears, I would like to hear your comments. Here are my stats.

2100g f-18
752g Battery 5300mah Gen Ace
420g Oleo f-18 Landing Gears
-----------------
3272g
186g - freewing landing gear
---------------
3086g F-18 Gross Weight

2395.5g thrust

Is it balance right? 3" behind the wing L.E. If that's right is the attitude right? Is the wing at a positive incidence to the runway?

Since the jet is rated for a 3700 mAh battery, it is probably too nose heavy to rotate. Be sure you have plenty of elevator throw and use the thrust hectoring to maximize your pitch rotation.

I think the 5300 will be WAY noseheavy (measure of course). Mine was nose-heavy with the x-flight CS12 / 1600 KV combo and just a 3700 mAH Gensace 35C. My maiden didn't have enough elevator with stock throws.

Check the balance and don't let it be too nose heavy. Set the stabs for maybe a 1/3 inch nose up trim. And give yourself plenty of throw on high rates in case you need it. The plane will land fast anyway, being noseheavy will exacerbate it.

Risk of relying on TV is that when you land if you chop the throttle your nose will pitch down and best case you'll smack hard.

sjw - You are correct about TV on landing. I just switch the mix off. I find is is much easier to fly at a high angle of attack without it. I am flying with a 4,000 pack and after moving the battery back about 1/4" it still barely rotates from grass. I'm going to move it back more. Also if new gear has been installed, it can affect the CG as well as the main wheel position which can affect takeoff rotation.

5300mah is too heavy. Evan i m on 4500mah push all the way back still nose heavy. Freewing landing gear will work well. You just need to upgrade to the Freewing new metal trunnion.

It will be alright. I fly stock for 60 flights, no problem.

Cheers..
