Build Log
Freewing 90mm F/A-18E Super Hornet build log, tips, tweaks, troubleshooting

**edit** This is the former "Hobby Lobby F/A-18 Super Hornet build log, setup tips/tricks, tweaks, troubleshooting" thread. Title has been changed to reflect that this is a Freewing jet. Hobby Lobby (now Hobby Express) was a distributor of this jet and labeled it "eRC" which is their marketing brand. All content, information pictures, etc., remain intact.

Hobby Lobby is shipping the F/A-18 Super Hornet today, so I wanted to start the build thread. I will update it again as soon as I receive the package, hopefully on Friday. HL is in TN and I'm in NC so I should get it quickly. Gonna be a big box I'm sure!

Got my tracking number from Hobby Lobby today, it will be here tomorrow.

I'm using the stock power system, with two 3s 4000 mAh batteries in series. If it's not enough flight time, I'll go to 5000 mAh packs.

Did you do a kit or airframe? I was not convinced that if the planes weight was 5lbs and the motor made a little over 5lbs it would have unlimmited verticle. I have a motor and fan from the euro and on the test stand it never reached 5lbs. , put it in a plane and it decrease not increases. I ended getting the kit version, lm going to use the cyclone 1900kv motor and wemo fan that I sell. Per and I tested both combos stock and wemo/1900 we got 6.3 lbs and 83amps and close to 1800 watts. The stock setup on the stand made just under 5lbs and the watts were close to 1600. We tested with a castle 100 ice and a 5000mah TP. If people want to stay with stock, I have a whole gang of freewing motors 90mm 1750kv to get rid of.

Mine is the receiver-ready version. It doesn't have to have unlimited vertical power; as long as it flies good I'll be happy.

If the frame is equal to or better then the starmax it will definitely do that. Its hard to beat the f18, do you absolute best to get the verticle stabs straight with each other/angle or it will wobble a little when it slows down.

Let me know if your nose gear doors are wide open in the box?
I received mine and it looks great except the nose gear doors are hanging wide open with nothing (string?) attached to close them

OK guys, just gone home and took some preliminary pictures. I have to admit it was packaged extremely well. I was worried about the UPS Gorillas but it came to my house unscathed. I'm hoping to start putting it together tonight. I am VERY impressed so far, there's not a single scratch or blemish on it. At least not that I can see.

I know you do not care about power but could you please post a thrust video. basically hold plane straight up with nose in air and let me see if it pulls out of your hand or just hoovers, or falls back. It would be greatly appreciated.

thanks... hope maiden goes well for ya!
