Can I use Speed 550(RC car motor) and sub C cell in Graupner Cumulus?

Hi all

I know there are quite a few of you fly this plane. Can the Cumulus 97 or Cumulus 2000 handle the RC car motor or 550 with sub C cell.

Can it fit??

Nope.
The fuse is too narrow and the sub "C" cells are too heavy. Why would you want to do this arrangement anyway?

I flew mine with the recommended power system from Hobby Lobby and made up my own Nimh packs from Radio Shack 1600 AA cells. She flew with authority and stayed up a minimum of 25 minutes on dead calm days.

Hi Perry

I have 4 sub R 2000 and 1500 packs which I flew my GL on until someone decided to shred me in mid air. While I want a new plane, I want to keep my cost down. The Cumulus fit the bills but the motor and batt is a question. I have easier access to 500 class motor and Sub c batt.

At this moment I may lean to the Junior Sport Plus which is meant for Speed 500 class.

Or I may consider your option.

BTW, how long those motor will last before it needs replacement?

Magna,
The Junior Sport is a good plane but use a geardrive with the 550 or 600 motor. Your climb rate will improve dramatically. Graupner has an inline geardrive/motor/esc combo which works very nicely. A freind and I used this motor/ gearbox combo on a Hangar 9 Aspire EP with an 11x8 Graupner folding prop and she flies sweet!

The 550 or 600 motors last a long time unless you use a voltage higher than it can handle. I would probably stay below 7 sub c cells, 8.4 volts, with the Junior on a Speed 600 motor. I have put on 2 dozen flight on a S 600 motor on 7 cells. I have fried a 600 motor on 8 flights with a 8 cell sub c pack recently thats how I know. Live and learn.
Good Luck!

Hi Perry

The Jr Sport Plus from Graupner come in 3 version: Std, Power pack(with the geared 500) and Std version but with Aileron servo built in.

Sorry my earlier question confusion. The question on the motor life is for Speed 400/480 and not the 500/600(this sucker last long!)

Since I have read your reply and other review about how well cumulus fly. Can you describe your climb rate.

My GentleLady weight about 50 oz, MA2.5:1 with 12X8 on 6 to 7 cell climb very well. With some head wind, my climb angle is about 40-45 degree. Very happy!

Can the cumulus with the Speed Gear 480 on 11X8 on 7-8 cells climb as well as what I had earlier on?

Hi Magna,
I would prefer the Junior Sport with any extra's that you can get, Kinda like buying a car with all the options. Reagrding your question on the S400/480 motors longevity, I would say that the same rule applies to those motors as well as any electric motor. Push it beyond it's amp range and they'll fail rapidly. Each motor has a max amperage rating. I unfortunately do not have such a list for you but somewhere on the EZone, there is a chart which shows the ratings of S400 motors and probably s550/600 motors.

The Cumulus with the Speed Gear 480 climbs at about a 35 to 40 degree angle. Gets to altitude in about 2 minutes. There is a review of the Cumulus here on Ezone by Sam Kranish. Check it out. It's a great review. I enjoyed mine very much and the S480 motor is more than adequate for it. Here is the specs on mine ( non aileron version 97)
Servos: (2) Hitec HS-81
Receiver: JR 610M
Esc: FMA Mini 30 (Awesome esc in a small package!)
Batteries: First flights 8 cell 500 AR packs. Later: 1600AA Nimh Radio Shack packs (home made)
Tx: Multiplex Cockpit MM
Cheers
Perry
