Hi All,

I'm currently building a prototype 1/4 scale Olympia 2b.

If anyone's interested, the build thread is here

Regards,

Shane.

Looks great, but your last update seems to be almost a month old.

This is a favorite plane of mine, having been into gliders both full sized and scale for almost fifty years. Just looked, and my first logged full sized glider flight was Sept. 15, 1963, and I built a few simple RC gliders around then and a friend built me a Ka-8. (His offer if I would just pay for the kit!)

Cheers

Hi Pete,

Last update was yesterday so you may have just missed the last couple of pages as Andy suggested...unless our Ozzie date format got you (dd/mm/yyyy)

Hope you enjoy the thread. I can't wait to get it finished!

Shane.

Nice work there Shane and Andy.

I am about to start doing some sheeting myself on the ASK-14, but using ply.

Shane, have you tried the cloudy ammonia with ply?

Hi Henry,

Thanks. No I haven't but having just had limited success with some "stiffer" balsa sheets when using cloudy ammonia, I'm not too hopefully of it's impact on ply.

Here's something I use. It's called a bending iron and I got it for violin making. It heats up and you can bend damp wood around it without too much practice.

I did the ribs (the outline of the violin body) in well under an hour on my first try. I also use it for sliced wing ribs. Ordinary sliced wing ribs don't have the grain following the curve of the rib, but I can bend a sheet of balsa and slice ribs where the grain follows the curve.

Not a cheap tool but a lot of people make their own using pipe and a propane torch.

Ribs have to be very accurate, but for planking I think you just have to get close since the strips are long and flexible and all you want to take care of is the worst bends.
