Dumas Sparrow Hawk conversion

Hi gang!

I just couldn't help myself! With the help of Mike/KSU Flyer's bad influence, I've got a Dumas Sparrow Hawk coming. I've been so very close to ordering it for a while

I'll update this thread when it comes in and I start the conversion.

Sparrow Hawk? Didn't they drop from...

Martin, I know you, you're up to something! You aren't by any chance thinking of launching it from......something large, are you? -thumbs

Thumbs, it's just going to be a straight conversion. I don't think I could bring myself to hook my baby onto anything larger for an aerial tow.

Mike, you are indeed a bad influence.

Here, I'll transcribe our conversation from memory such that everyone can see:

Quote:
Martin: Gee, I think I have enough planes. I don't need any more
Mike: Get the Sparrow Hawk anyway!
Martin: I really shouldn't. I should spend my money on food and clothing
Mike: Food? Clothing? Let's get real! You need more airplanes!
Martin: I don't think I should. I think I'll invest in retirement funds
Mike: Buy the plane! You know you want to! Everyone else is
Martin: Are you sure?
Mike: Go for it!
Martin: Well, ok, but only because you insist
I think it was pretty much like that. Well, maybe. Possibly. OK, so maybe it was more like:

Quote:
Martin: I'm placing an order from a place that stocks the Sparrow Hawk. Should I get it?
Mike: Yup
Martin: OK

Looking forward to seeing it Martin.

So many planes to build, so little time.

Hey, I'm building one now!

I did one this Winter, but it died from battery failure right after launch. It flew great for the three flights I had in it, so I'm off to do it again.

As of writing the fuse is done and so are the tail feathers. I thought this time I would go pull-pull on the controls and make a battery tray under the top wing with access through the cockpit.

The only modifications I made on the first were to hinge the surfaces with 1/8" balsa on the hinge line and sewn hinges, ply firewall for the motor mount, and fiberglass tape running the length of the wing spars.

I have pics of the current build if anybody is interested.

OK guys, if you really want to know how the conversation with Martin went before he purchased the Dumas Sparrow Hawk...

Quote:
Martin: Gee, I think I need more planes. I don't have enough…
Mike: hmmm… What the *&%$ are you talking about?
Martin: What do you think of the Sparrow Hawk?
Mike: Are you serious, I mean, come on man!
Martin: Well, I look at it this way… Sure, I may not have
food to eat or clothes to wear, but who cares…Planes are goooood!
Mike: Are you sure?
Martin: Yup
Mike: What does Christine say?
Martin: Christine Shmistine
Mike: Alright man, whatever
Martin: OK, well, since you think its OK to order it
Mike: WHAT?
Martin: “Dreamer may not reply because his or her status is set to Away.”
Mike: …?

Then I had this conversation with mike:

Quote:

Paul: Hey mike, what do you think of that Sparrow Hawk
Mike: Martin should trade it in for some food and shelter
Paul: Shelter shmelter
Mike: *sigh*
Paul: So mike, did you make those "modifications" to the Hellcat?
Mike: Hehe, yes I did. When you put even the SLIGHTEST of G's on the wing, it snaps like a toothpick. Muwhahaahahaa
Paul: Muwhahaahahahaha
Mike: Muwhahahaha
Paul: Muwhaha
Mike: haha
Paul: ha

I've created a monster

Teko, I'd love to see pictures!

Also, do you have the wing area or could you measure the wingspan precisely and the chord such that I can know the wing area?

Tell me all about your last one. Was it R/E? What was the power and AUW?

Martin

Power System?

Dreamer: What motor/prop and gearbox [if any] do you plan to use?

Aerolock? What are you using for your Beaver? I have that kit, as well as the Dumas Helldiver, and a few others on my "do list" for e-power.

PJ, I'm planning on very likely a DX-2, 1, A or LPS of some sort. It'll depend on how the AUW is looking and what an approriate scale sized prop is.

OK guys, the numbers I used were 27.25" for the wing span, 257" sq. for the area, and 6 oz with two HS55. I ran it with a 5:1 gear box, a SP300, and an 8X5 prop.

Here's the elevator modification
