I casted lead in brass U-profiles for my FS3. Else you can make the dimension a tenth of a mm smaller and overpaint the lead.

The FAI limit for most of our planes is above 4.2kg (56dm^2*75gr/dm^2) and I flew only in one F3B contest where people were going over 4kg AUW (very windy Kirchheim 2009).

Mike, where did you get the three views of Fosa and Cyril.
I have not seen them ever.

Please, could you put them here to the thread?

FOSA vs FS3, here we go

Mike and I did a day of comparison and we got some data. Draw any conclusion you want (Mike and I agree to draw no conclusion out of it):

I have only the launch heights in the earlier morning when we flew distance (after that, my Zlog died). Only weak wind, with more and more thermal activity:

Plane; height; ballast (equal wing loading); line diameter

FS3:269m 0% 1.22mm

FS3:250m 50% 1.12mm

Fosa:234m, 50%, 1.12mm

FS 3, 257m 50% 1.22mm

Fosa: 273m, 50%, 1.15mm

FS3: 289m, 70%, 1.12mm

Fosa: 269m, 70%, 1.12mm

FS3: 201m, 70%, 1.22mm

Fosa: 289m, 70%, 1.12mm

FS3: 257m, 70%, 1.12mm

Fosa: 272m, 70%, 1.12mm

Speed runs in the afternoon:

Fosa:
17.4s
16.4s
17.3s

FS3:
14.11s
19.8s (cut)
17.29s
16.57s

Fosa:15.55s
FS3 17.21s
Fosa:17.33s
FS3:16.16s

Last flights we flew interlaced, condition were varying in the morning and got flater towards the evening. I did not list all the cuts we flew, there were tons of it (sometimes also problems with base B). Mike had a 17.8s with a cut, I had a 18.xs with a cut, both PBs in cutting. Don't remember if the 19.8s was a cut.

Mike has Fosa launch data for his speed runs, where he flew heavier than in distance. I unfortunately don't have mine for the FS3.

Mike was already flying very well with his new plane and the Fosa left a good impression.

Look at the photos. This is a Freestyler 3 wing with leading edge aligned with Fosa leading edge. Note that the Fosa has less wing area.

Yes, the 19.8 was a cut. The 17.8 was a 265m launch. The uphill to base B with a side hill valley in between and the windsock in the middle of the course took a while to get used to. Plus the extra overload of only two people to launch and wind down winches and get over to base A without tripping over the winch that was close to the sight. Not enough time to get ready and properly prepare to fly a speed run. And hoping newly trained guys push the buttons correctly. I did add a little nose weight later on and adjusted rates on elevator some.

Air got worse later and it started to cool down.

I did fly some flights just above the wing loading of a Freestyler full of the stock ballast. For you F3j guys, I was flying the thing in no wind at a 20.5 oz/ft2 wing loading. Best launch at that weight was 252m

The 15.55 was a 269m launch, 19.15 wing loading or about 87% for the freestyler guys.

The initial unballasted launch may have been 284m or that could have been some lift later in the flight.

The 289m launch was some distance flying. Nice air, I counted 34 laps in 4 minutes.

Now I need to find a day with wind (and not real cold). I want to see what it does when I have it filled up with ballast at 3750g

I flew all my runs with 70% ballast on the FS3, the 14.11s was in a period of quite good air.

Mike had quite good air on his 17.8s cut run as well, keep in mind that the fastest flight (I am aware of) with cut is about 16.xs.

Mike looked actually quite happy with those high wing loadings, the Fosa could launch and handle them well in the light conditions.

So, I guess the real question would be, will you be trying to double up with a second Fosa for the worlds, or not?
I was sursprised to hear a rumor that one of your team mates is changing planes before the worlds.....

Realistically if you want 3 of a model for the worlds, you have to start the year with 4.

Right now I'm just hoping for some nice days the next few months.

Plus there are always new models that the producers release just before the WC so you might have to wait till the last minute to get your planes.

Hi Fosa Enthusiasts,

Met Jiri in southern Germany today with a friend who picked up his Fosa, simply gorgeous and incredibly well built and finished.

Here are a few pictures of another customer's Fosa with Jiri's RDS linkage pre-installed and the RTF fuselage.

Can't wait for Jiri to build mine.

Enjoy, Martin
