More ribs... So far, this is the easiest thing I have ever built... I have a good solution for the fuselage structure, too...

1 oz., so far.

Meanwhile, I am working on the CAD file... Fixed a couple minor bugs in the wing design, and starting serious work on the fuselage.

Over the last couple days, I have focused my attention on the nose, which is definitely the hardest component to simplify into a balsa structure. I cut up the old foam plug, and got the cross-sections off of that... I also found that Rhino has an 'unroll' function, so I can calculate sheeting shapes..!

As you can see, the nose is quite nearly done... Need to add a couple more longerons, or whatever they are called... I refuse to end up with the 'starved horse' look on this one..!

There will be a bit of sanding involved in construction, but nothing too extreme... Sanding a 0.5" radius round along the top of the nose, things like that.

(Note that the canopy is a series of 0.25" balsa components, stacked six deep... You simply assemble it by aligning the back edges, and then sand it down, so the top edge of each one is blended into the bottom edge of the one above it... At least so goes the theory... )

Luke I've been following your thread. I admire your persistance and am glad you are staying with it. The Starship was easily the most striking prop plane ever IMO and I'd love to have one. The design challenges prevent all but the most talented from attempting one.

Consider staring a new thread since you're going balsa not foam!!

Luke,

Did you notice the chase plane for the StarShipOne flight.
I see they are still flying theirs. The 3/4 scale I think.

No, the 86% scale POC ship built by Scaled was destroyed... (See here ) The Starship used for the high-alt. chase of the Tier One program belongs to Robert Scherer... It is a standard Starship 2000A. (See here )

Luke,

Thanks for the info. Real shame about all the Starships. Even the Scale one was a keeper in my opinion.
STILL WAITING FOR A KIT OF YOURS !!!!!!!!!!!
Looking real nice though. I still prefer building with balsa.
Keep up the excellent work.

Sam.

Beautiful model I have some experience with Starships as you can see from the picture. Let me know if I can help in anyway.
