EE60 goes DLE 20cc Gas

Been flying the DLE 20 on my EE60 3D profile for 3 days at Nashbro. Burned about 2/3rds of a gallon so far and will shortly switch to all synthetic. Got home and then when back to our local field this afternoon and got some numbers on the current prop on the DLE 20...

Fuel: 87 octane with 27-28:1 Stihl HP non-synthetic oil
Prop: Xoar 17x6
Tach: 8,350 rpm
Static thrust: 13lbs 11oz

Looking great so far. I'll get a video done tonight if I can. I'm also running a 6oz tank and it uses about 2/3rds of the tank in about 9-10 mins of hard 3D flying.
The motor has great power and leaves my Saito 100 in the dust (was on the same plane). It raised the overall weight to just under 7lbs but yanks it around like a ragdoll with no adverse flight effects to the plane. The only thing I not comfortable yet with is the low end throttle control...it's either on power or off. I think a lot of this will improve as the motor continues to break in and when I switch the oil over to a higher ratio synthetic. So far it's been run with these props:

Zinger 16x8 - stinks, no power, way low on thrust
APC 17x4W 3D prop - decent but the idle transition was terrible, 9700 rpm!
Xoar 16x8 - Good prop but not as much thrust on the high end as the next one...
Xoar 17x6 - Hands down the best prop so far. Great punch out of hover, great top end, improved low end but more to come on this....

Video of Caveman flying my EE60 with the DLE 20cc and a Xoar 16x8 prop....wish I'd taped the Xoar 17x6 flights!

Battery usage and flight times from this last weekends flights at Nashbro:

I forgot to post about using a single A123 battery for receiver and ignition. On the EE60 DLE 20cc powered plane I used a 1100mah A123 with dual leads from WrongwayRC. I then put a diode extension from the ignition switch to the ignition to step the voltage down to safe levels for the ignition. This worked perfectly with no interference and no ignition problems. Doing hard 10 min 3D flights you can safely get 4 flights in before recharging (less than 10 mins recharging time with the A123 packs). This left the pack around 55% full according to my Cellpro charger. Btw, the EE60 runs two 5625mg digitals in the tail, a 5645mg digital servo for throttle (just what I had at the time) and two Futaba 3010's on the ailerons.

On the larger 71" EE (Colts proto plane) with a Syssa 30cc I ran a 2300 mah A123. I flew this plane for at least 7 flights at a time and had greater than 60% of the pack left. It has 4 5645mg digital servos and one hs-85 throttle servo. The pack was also a A123 with dual leads (and the diode extension as before) from WrongwayRC.

So, using one pack is definitely possible if you need to watch the weight as is often the case in 3D planes. If not, I'd use a separate pack.

Any more thoughts on the performance of this motor? I read in another thread that you were working on smoothing out the transition from idle to WOT and like to hear how it went.

I've been looking at one of these engines on a Mojo 65...

I've gotten it a lot better with the 3/4" long carb throttle arm, improved geometry, and throttle curves on the TX. I still need to try a few more props but haven't been able to with the weather lately. Hope to this Sunday afternoon if the weather cooperates.

Been a long time since I posted on this thread but many EE60's are flying on the DLE 20cc. It's proving to be a great combination. The key to good throttle control/transition is using a Xoar 17x6 prop (JC makes a good alternative as well), a long carb arm from WrongWayRC.com, and proper throttle to servo geometry.

Here's a video from this last weeks Nashbro showing this all working well together:

Don't forget about the long ARM setup, for 3D throws.

I run the same setup on my 71" slick...Rich is the MAN I have had zero issues with that set up and the quick charge on the A123 is a thing of beauty!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention I also use a throttle curve on my Hitec A9 radio. Tired using that to resolved the low end on/off throttle response at first and found that it wasn't enough without good throttle to servo geometry as well as the long WrongWayRC carb arm.

Do you have any pics of where you put all the electronics for the motor?
