Hello guys!

Well, I traded a slimer .40 ARF kit and .40 engine for TWO HL Champions! One is brand new, the other it built with JR 610 Rx and 241 servos all around!

Im curious - Ive seen some posts on different power set ups for the Champion. What yields the best results for the best price? I dont think the smaller brushless motors really suit me well (A bit much money to spend on the little tikes!), so the Hackers and Astros are probably out.

Ive seen two other set ups - S300s and S280BBs. My question is, which would be better? Ive got 8-10 cell Sanyo 250 NiCad packs (350 NiCad packs too) - I think the S300 pulls too many amps for these packs, right? How many amps will the 280BBs pull? What gearbox and prop for the 280BBs? Which 280BB motor?

If I go for the S300 motors, what are the best cells for the job?

The stock motor is too weak for the champion. I use a 280BB w/8 600ae cells, 7x5 prop, stock gearbox and the thing flies nice. I'm probably pulling 9+ amps though and I'm not sure if this 280BB is going to last too long. Unless you want to get higher MaHr batteries you should probably stick with the stock motor.

A 280BB is fine at 9A, I'm using one direct drive on an own design aerobat (28" span, 13 oz approx) and it pulls about 9.4A static on 6x500AR. It's not much more than warm after flight.

I'm pulling 9.0-9.5amps almost continuous for the entire flight on my 280BB using an APC 8x6 prop and 8-cells of 1000mAh NiMH.

I'm afraid that you will find the 3 power systems I have tried on the Champion to be about it.

I do have about half a dozen 500/600 8 cell packs too that I use for S400 models. Though, I use them very little since now that I use the heavier 1400AE packs....I prefer the duration of those for my S400 models....definitely no good for the Champion of course!

What kind of flight times will I get with the 280BB and 8 500/600 cells? What gearbox? What prop?

Also Greg, where do I find those NiMH 1000s? What does a pack of those weigh and how many cells?

And how about "upping" the ante to a 400 geared motor for fun? Since you guys are already running the 500/600 packs and flying at around 15 ounces, a geared S400 motor would only add about 2 more ounces, but will spin the same sized props nearly 4,000 RPM more.

Ive scoped the Champion kit at the local shop and I have to admit, it feels flimsy for say "that" much motor. But, what would an extra 2 ounces hurt

Tell me if Im crazy guys....I dont want to toss an S400 motor on and abuse one of the poor Champions...
