Are you getting tired of.....

.... Extras and similar planes yet? I sure as heck am. Those scale aerobatic planes have been done to death. I remember when people said that Cubs and Mustangs were over done but neither of those can begin to approach the number of Extras out there.

Extra this, Yak that, Edge.... Ahhh.... I don't think I'll ever own another Extra, Cap, Edge or other similar plane again.

I've got a nice pattern plane, a good kick around sport model. I'd kind of like a nice "touch-n-go" flying scale high wing plane and maybe a odd war bird of some type. It took a lot of years but scale aerobatic planes have finally run their course with me.

Sheesh. I can't believe I said that. It feels good.

My brother and I just recently attended our first GIANT SCALE fun-fly and I must say was VERY disappointed that 90% of the planes were 3D planes. Not saying anything bad about them but just wish there would of been more of the other kind.

Try something new like floatplanes or what I like, FAST aerobatic sport planes (old proven desings such as the Sig Four-Star or GP Super Sportster)

Yup, they are a tired and boring lot. Also sick sick sick of "Prop-hanging" airplanes. Go get a heli if thats what you want to do.
Besides, the vast majority of the giant Extras, Edge's etc that I have seen flown just prop hung or flopped all over the place with no sense of precision. I have yet to witness a perfect slow roll or two super-imposed loops done right by one of those things....

Extra, Edge, Cap, Katana, Blah blah blah. They all look and fly the same. Everyone buys the same ARF's that all have similar color schemes. There is nothing at all interesting about these planes.

Prop hanging planes were fun for a little while. I played with some flat foamies indoors in the winter here in Michigan several seasons ago but that got old after awhile. I've got a Trex 450 but flying that isn't the same thing so I don't think telling people that hover planes to "get a heli" accomplishes anything.

I've just come to a point where following the popular planes has become a bore. I'm a little surprised it took me so long to get there. I'm generally not one to follow the crowd.

Anyway, I'm really liking the smooth aerobatics of pattern and the nice lines of the planes.

Still, I think my interest in the hobby all together is starting to wane. These days instead of saving up for my next plane, I'm saving up to buy something else. I've never really done that with my mad money before.... It always went to planes.

i agree, they can look boring...if you let them.
i'm in the process of building an Edge 540 to a more scale appearance. it has the under wing window which shows the faux frame, knobs and pulleys. the finish will have simulated screws too. and the cock pit will get dressed up scale like.
btw, this plane isn't an ARF, it's a balsa kit that i'm bashing.

That will be an edge with an edge indeed!

But for the most part I'm on this anti-bandwagon....they are all the same and getting duller by the minute. I dont want to yack extra over the edge of anything thankyou very much!

I also agree that Cubs and Mustangs are over done, but somehow thats not as big a deal to me......I blame my respect of history for that.

When the Red Bull airraces are long gone and later looked back on as a golden moment in aviation history I might want an Extra, but that day is a long way off.

I've got about two dozen planes more or less, and not a single full-fuse Extra, Edge, Cap-232 or similar... but there are several profile 3D planes, some foam and some balsa. One of these has "Yak" in the name, and another is called an "Extra."

I was attracted to pattern planes early on, starting with my first Formosa. I like how they fly and how they look. Whether they're scale or not doesn't matter to me.

In this regard I'm mostly an outlier among my parkflying pals; most of them have at least one or two scale acrobats in their collection.

One only needs to understand the term "GIANT SCALE Fun-Fly" in order to understand that the event is based upon 3D aircraft putting on impressive airshow displays.

I have been flying 3D for over 6 years, and the precision and skill set a lot of the pilots that fly larger aircraft is very impressive.

Not everyone is capable of doing a harrier roll, down to the point of dragging the wingtips on the ground, or doing a knife edge pass mere inches off the deck, at full throttle. I'm getting pretty aggravated at people saying that 3D flying is boring, and doing the same maneuvers over and over again. Maybe if you tried it, you'd realize we try maneuvers over and over again to perfect our flying skills.

Also, a uneducated statement like "Extra, Edge, Cap, Katana, Blah blah blah. They all look and fly the same. Everyone buys the same ARF's that all have similar color schemes. There is nothing at all interesting about these planes." is a bogus statement whipped out of an area I will not mention on this forum. Shame.

If you let them look boring, and let them feel boring in the air, then they will indeed be boring. The VERY same goes for ANY airplane, so DO NOT DIRECT THIS AT THE 3D CROWD. Discuss this on a couple other forums I can think of (of which I am an active member) and you will be scarred off.

In my opinion, there are not enough people that lack the skill to fly 3D, because they just refuse to learn how to do it, or get frustrated with it, and give up too easily. Hovering can get easy after a while of doing it. Torque rolling is a LOT more difficult. ANTI-torque rolling is even MORE difficult! And don't even get me started on point roll torque rolling.. Also, transferring from a torque roll to a rolling circle isn't as easy as it might seem.

One more thing: Not enough of you are into sloping. Stop flying these weak, underpowered power planes and start flying REAL planes, the ones who don't need anything more than wind to fly. current speed record is 445mph...

Interesting bunch of opinion there, Xpress. I didn't put down anybody, 3D or otherwise. I said I was tired of looking at the same planes over and over again.... and that was after a long time of flying the same. 3D and scale aerobatic planes have been all the rage for the better part of 20 years now. I'm just finding that they aren't as interesting to me as they once were. You like them.... that's fine. You're with the majority. I'm just..... not and I wanted to express that.

Oops. I didn't read the post you were responding to. Anyway, I don't even think he meant as much by it as you put into the response. Of course, I'll let freechip speak for himself.
