Scratchbuilt Twin Beech model 18

I've been pondering this build for years. About 33 to be exact. My father, now 78 worked on the venerable Beech 18 in the Navy out of NAS Oceana in the early 50's. When I first started flying RC, I contacted Beechcraft and asked them for some drawings to use to help build a RC model. With electric power allowing ultra-light building possible, now is the time.

Size will most likely be 65" WS. The standard four channels with retracts. Lucky for me the Navy decided maintaining the retracting tail wheel was too much work and locked them in the down position. Power looks like it's going to be a rewind red and blue wonder x 2. A scale prop would be around 11" but I may fudge on that since wrapping a RBW to swing a 1060 without turning lipos into too much heat is within my limited skill level. I had originally thought a 32oz AUW would be doable...and I still believe it is. I'm going to nix that in favor of adding a bit more scale and shoot for 40oz.
This build will be a long one. Partly because I haven't so much as taken a pencil to paper yet.

More to come!

Well, good luck and can't wait to see the finished product; no matter how long it takes!

One of the first things I must build is a larger building surface. The wing will be built in one piece. Beech used a welded steel tube truss type spar....Me?....NOT!

This will be a nice one! My grandfather used to own one of these back in the day. He would fly people to Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. He didn't live long enough to give me a flight though,

I decided to build the Staggerwing first. While building the model 17, I have been able to located some good drawings of the Model 18.
