GWS Beaver

Sept 20 2010

Here is my 5 year old GWS de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver. It's very light weight and the slowest plane at the field. I've done some gliding at higher altitudes and it's fun, smaller packs can make it glide longer. Take offs are half throttle from hand launch or ground. Flights at constant 45% throttle are over 40 minutes on 1200mAh. The power system draws about 1-1.9Amps to fly. Unlimited vertical at full throttle (lol not very scale, but neither is the plane). This morning I mounted the Hobbyking 720 wing camera on the DHC-2. It was a bit too far forward, resulting in needing full elevator travel and I had to then switch to high rates and use 60-75% throttle. I flew for 11 minutes. Upon landing, I needed full high rates elevator and some throttle to land, and it was still a fast landing. The center of gravity has always been sensitive on this plane, but nose heavy is far better than tail heavy on this model.

I mounted the camera beneath the center of gravity between the land gear and extracted some nice stills from the most recent evening flight video. The airfoil is at its limit with the extra 30g camera, as the trailing edge of this concave wing profile is excited with oscillation at intervals. My current flight battery is 113g and flyers great, but the airspeed while hauling the camera can be too much if the nose is pointed down while the motor is running.
