That's the same type of heli pad I've been thinking about building for years now! Where I fly the parking lot is always dusty and grimy and I used a big piece of cardboard secured with weights. It works, but it ain't pretty.

Can you detail it's construction? I'm curious to the metal frame...

Regards,
Pete

If you are asking me, no metal frame. It is Duct Tape to clean up the edges a bit. The base is made of 2 pieces of 2' x 4' birch plywood connected with a a 4' piano hinge. I stapled a 5 dollare piece of outdoor carpet to the boards and trimmed to size and cut at the joint. I used handles from Home depot. Finally used window locks from home depot to hold it folded when not in use.

This winter I am going to change it a bit and put a 2 x 4 frame under it to get it off the ground. and make it more rigid.

Thank you for the thorough explanation, much appreciated! That was along the same lines of what I've been thinking...the 2X4 makes sense too... I've been thinking about doing this for SO LONG, seeing you do it so nicely inspires me! Thanks again.

Here's my pad... Made from thick foam-core and secured with plastic stakes. Its super light and very portable but not heavy enough to use in tall grass. I built it with the intention of using it on grass and clay (baseball diamonds) and with the ability to throw it under my arm and walk to the field with my heli and TX in a case.

Okay guys,

Now for the inexpensive stuff.

Some pressed board and black tape. Notice the custom carrying slot.

You can make it any size ya want, depending on heli size (450,500, 600)

Oh, on a side note, it easily hangs up in your garage too.

I'm in the process of building a heli-pad with 1/4" ply. It'll be made of 4 pieces, 1'x1' that are hinged like that white foam one above. Planning to paint a yellow H with a dashed circle around it on black background. Should be just big enough for my 450.
