Is there a way to test an engine without an ESC?

Hi all
My plane had sever water damage. I lost the ESC. Can I test the engine somehow without it?

You cannot run a brushless motor without the ESC.... but if it is a brushed motor you can simply connect it directly to a battery.

ya it's brushless. Looks ok, can't imagine it would be broken.

You could always test for short circuits with a multimeter. Check the connectors as well and clean if there's any signs of oxidation.

If you have a really good multimeter, you could measure the winding resistances too. They are normally from few tens of milliohms to couple of hundred milliohms, all three should be identical. In any case, there is a remote chance that the ESC took the motor with it when it broke. This would result in shorted winding that is usually evident from color changes and such.

Most likely the motor is OK.

Acutally you could do a sort of test with just a single alkaline battery (1.5v). By connecting it to two of the leads it should move a few degrees. By connecting all combination of leads two at a time you could confirm that you have continuity in all windings. I haven't done it, it was just an idea.
