He posted that it was a tip stall....then throttled it up and chased it to the ground.

Hey guys, question...did a search and didnt find anything on it (unless I missed it of course!) but what is the best way to bend the stock main gear doors without cracking the paint? I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this!

How many of you run the doors, and how many of you ditch them all together?

I saw the technique about rounding the doors if you fly on grass fields but thats about it!

Take a blunt exacto blade and using the thick edge score the backside of the door. Then turn the door over paint side up and use the edge of your table to slightly fold the door along the score.

stoneenforcer, this is what mine looked like after I hit the dirt after a tip stall. I pulled out the electronics, and put it in a new bird. I only had to replace the front nose retract.

I am convinced that the "twist" I put in the controls has kept this from happening a second time, plus beware of the high rates as they can tip stall the wing. An accelerated stall with this bird without wing twist is almost unrecoverable.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "twist in control" or "wing twist"?

Thanks

I scored them as Bob B mentioned, but I folded them in three places (first photo) to get a better seal against the wing.
Then I decided straight sides would be better, so I made my own from .040" Styrene. They seal great against the wing. The leading edge angle helps with FOD and runway cracks, but might wanna make them shorter then mine for grass operation.

Bob- awesome advice, thank you!

Gary - I found all your threads on your homemade gear doors and they look great! I don't plan on flying mine off grass, so I guess there is no need to round the edges, but I like the fact yours seal up better with the wings.

So it sounds like most guys are going with gear doors for limiting drag and asthetic purposes?

There going to crack, split, loosen...then your going to fix them, then there going to crack, split, loosen... then your going to fix them. Dont bother with them..trust me..it makes no difference in speed or flight characteristics having these on or off. Just my 2 cents..but been there done it!!!

I have a Turnigy ESC in mine. (not using the built in BEC though) I also looked for a cheaper gear option when building mine and I just couldn't find one. Not to mention.. the stock gear just bolt right in. The 150.00 price tag is swift punch to the groin though.

Thanks. Doors always look great, add to the uniqueness of your aircraft, and if your interested in speed they will add 5+ mph to your top speed. (especially the nose gear door)
