Painting EPO Foam Cessna 182

I have a very nice kit , the park flyer size EPO Cessna 182 from Hobbyking. It comes white with blue decals and would look fine like this but I was thinking of paintiin it all yellow with acrylic then adding the blue decals. First of all will this paint be ok? I tested on the styro box and it was ok, Second do you think it would look ok? I wonder if it will look like a big CHAMP then, lol. What do you guys think? keep it white or paint it yellow (or another color)?

paint job

Acrylic paint works well...i painted up a sukhoi 26m using Tamiya car paint...paint it like you see fit! it's your plane...

The yellow would make it pop out in the sky as a cub or something from far off...If it were mine...go with a sky blue paint with lemon yellow trim and maybe some red inside the yellow trim. Dont paint the whole plane blue, just wherever blue needs to be to keep weight down. Plus, you can paint right over tape and it still will look good.

Good luck on the job...u wont be disappointed

Thanks man, your sukhoi looks awsome! The reason I asked is I have never seen a yellow cessna 182, they are all white so I didn't know if it would just look wrong any other color.

I'm about to repaint my Icon A5, I cleaned the entire bird using acetone - and then I test sprayed the hatch with regular acrylic carpaint. It looks great, but low stick tapes does strip the paint - easily ... Perhaps the Tamiya paints are better suited, please report back. Thanks.

Dragevo...i dont think you're going to find any kind of tape or paint that wont be removed once the tape has to come back off...I always use some touch up whenever i needed to get back into the canopy on the sukhoi (which isnt that often if you keep it out of the ground )

I see, & that would have been perfectly acceptable if the Icon hadn't been a seaplane. I mean, I must seal the battery hatch with packing tape after swapping packs - so it would be nice to have a paint that didn't strip so easily.

Perhaps I should use touch up paint between flights ?

lol...that would get somewhat heavy after a few flights. Is it possible to do a custom magnetic hatch with a waterproof container for the battery? Just an idea

Yes, they did actually use a magnet there. Problem is, that the rear & front of the hatch have simple vertical cuts. So, even though the hatch fits quite snugly - water spray may run straight down on to the esc, servos, lipos and all the other goodies. I'm sure it's possible to rebuild it so that it's waterproof, but packing tape is an easier & safer solution. Of course, flying off dry land would be even safer

I wanted to keep this one scale colors this time so I went with blue/white.
I planned on a dark blue (to match my decals) on the bottom half , a white stipe, then a black stripe, then the top half is white. After I painted the bottom half dark blue it was very dull so I put a second coat of metallic blue (hopefully the second coat didn't add too much weight). It looks pretty good but I don't know if the decals match now. The yellow is just masking tape. here's my progess.

Nice!, I like that . I don't have any acrylic gold bot I could pick some up. also,Does painting the prop effect performance?

Acrylic paint sux, I peeled the black pin stripe off trying to remove the masking , so I had to free hand re-paint the black stripe. It's ok but not perfect. I will buy some black pinstripe decal to put on to of that to make it perfect I guess. I know I am going to add the window stickers, the "Cessna 182" decal and the small "Cessna" decal on the tail but I am undecided on the blue ones that almost match What do you guys think?

I was also wondering is there anything you can brush or spray on acrylic and EPO foam that would keep the paint from peeling long term but wouldn't add much weight (not like coating it with epoxy lol)?

Man what a mess lol

in another string of posts here under painting EPO, this guy says he uses enamel spray paint and it won't melt it or anything as long as you hold it back 14 inches or so while spraying. Is that true? does anyone have experience with enamel , spray and brushed on foam?

I tested testors model enamel (brush on) and it does melt standard styro a little so I'm not going to try it on my EPO plane, maybe he was talking about some foam safe enamel?? who knows. anyway here is my finished product except I may put decal black pin stripeing over my freehand painted one. Can't wait to give her the maiden vayage today. Enjoy the pictures
