Protocol for putting A Boat to WOODIES: Showcase / Show and Tell. –
Purpose: A thread to show ALL (or as many as possible) of the boats of the Woodies’ Community in a single, comprehensive thread.

1)Please post ost ONE Boat per Posting.
2) If you have multiple boats – post each boat in its own, separate post within the thread.
3) You can post as many as 10 to 12 pictures per boat/posting. (Action shots - gooood! Kmot inspired diaramas; gooood!)
4) Include a brief history of the model and anything else you might think of (as long as it pertains to the boat… no politics Keep it under 120 thousand words; novels, OK – trilogies at 500 pages per volume, no, but at least, name, model, when made, (if appropriate; type of project, was it a rebuild, was it refurbished etc.) and anything you feel is special about the boat.
5) If there is an associated build thread, please include a link to it.

Please keep discussions, other than the boat profile on this thread to a minimum. If you want to chat about the a specific boat, please start an additional thread specific to the boat.

Well since I did start this, guess I'll go first ... kinda... since my woodies are in boxes. I haven't had time to build them yet, but they exist in their embryonic forms. The stack is behind my daughters drafting table. Hopefully I will have a couple in the water by next season. Most of the boats I made during and after high school and college, didn't survive. Family needed space and most got 'donated,' finished or not.

Here is a link to a thread that I started two years ago. It's all about the Sterling 63' motor yacht with lots of pictures of different models of the same boat by the members of the RC Groups Scale boats forum.
I will take some new pics of my 63' asap and post them as the 63 was my first RC boat model. It's still my favorite boat and even though I made a lot of mistakes with it,it still came out pretty good I think.

what a great resource.I spend a little time in upper michigan each summer and I have been building models of boats in the area from measurements taken from the actual boats.The last three,a 1/10 scale chris craft sportsman,a 1/8 scale 1942 23' chris craft torpedo nose barrel back and a 1/8 scale 1930's hacker triple are finished woodwork and running gear wise but I have not figured out a good way th complete the windshields and rub rails.Sounds like maybe I should consider using brass/silver solder then nickle plating them?any help would be appreciated

Nice work Finn. Good looking boats for sure. So here's my two cents worth with my Sterling 63' Motor Yacht. She's 14 years old now and a little beatup from several trips around the Horn and through the Big Ditch. Ran her aground one time in the Cape Cod Canal where no ships go anymore but the Coasties are there to help and the Corps of Engineers keeps spending millions to keep the old ditch navigable.
Anyway here she is in all her faded glory. My first RC boat. Pete

Just stumbled onto this thread so I thought I'd post a couple of pics of the first scratch built woodie I ever made.
The 'Sea Sprite' is a English gentleman's launch.
It's got an old 550 motor from a broken battery drill running on a little 2200mah Lipo.
The timber is Teak & white Ramin

At the request of Craig C, I am posting one of my first kit builds, purchased in either 1957 0r 58’. The model is a Century Sea Maid 20’ by Sterling models. The model was later modified to include updated power package from M.A.C.K. Products and has remained the same ever since. The pictures posted in this thread were taken at one of our club meets this year, 2010. The model has never been refinished from the original build.

These are really nice looking models guys. Love the mahogany. The only way that I know to keep amodel that clean is put it into a display case.

You did a beautiful job on your Sea Maid, frankg. Shows how a well designed, well built and nicely detailed model can hold up well over time. She looks like she's good for another 50 years.
It's interesting how Sterling's Sea Maid models on eBay bring higher prices than Sterling's 'Classic Mahogany Runabout' - from what I've observed. Both make into very nice looking models, but I find the Sea Maid's overall lines more appealing. Apparently, others do too, and are willing to pay more for their preference.

it says show and tell so here i go.lol. i got this in a trade.i traded a mrp ripper 1/8 scale electric rc car worth brand new $100 bucks.this guy didnt know what he had and i didnt too.but i did know it was old and the smell of it told me jump on it.so i traded it and found out what it is and now im like omg i scored.its my first boat and im hooked cant wait to run it in the lake.pics and vids will be comeing soon.im like a little kid on christmas morning right now.here are a couple of pics of my diamond in the rough....enjoy!!

This boat I built with my three boys over a couple of winter months.This was my first boat build.This boat is by Legend Model Boats.It is the "California Kid" 1958 crackerbox.There is a complete build log in the Woodies Show and Tell Showcase under build logs.It is a great kit and the qaulity of the wood is second to none.I used a couple of base coats of West System Marine then used Epifanes varnish on the mahogany.In the sunlight the wood looks fantastic especially with the chrome fittings and gold engine turned leaf.The name on the back was the nickname of my greatgrandfather who built wood boats like this and had a schooner.By the way you can get your own custom graphics or names done from companies listed in this web sight.Hope this inspires others because if I can do it believe me you can do it too.

Bob SF just completed the rebuild of the Hinky Dinky for a friend and I took some pictures of it
out on Spreckels Lake the other day when she had her first voyage since work began.

Ran across a scan of an old print of my CC Berkeley Constellation from the late 50's. Probably my first boat build , powered by Pittman Panther, 6 volt wet cell controlled by an escapement and Babcock hard tube radio. Not many Berkeley boat pics on this forum. Ran across an old 1958 ad for the kit, $6.95 !!!!

I never intended to make it a running model, but maybe I should! It's pretty small, but with what's available for power and control today it would be possible I guess. It sure would be fun to see how it would control with that crazy front rudder
