Build Log
Peter Rake 1/6 Scale Albatros DVa

Following the successful completion of the FE8, I'm on to the next build.
I asked Pete to draw this one up before I started on the FE, but he couldn't fit it in at the time. I now have the plans in hand and have begun on the prop. One goal for this build will be to keep as close to Pete's original design as I can. You won't see any real changes (if at all) to the structure, but I have free run on the "embellishments". Two items I'm looking forward to tackling will be the fuselage skin in wood and lozenge camouflage.
Vintage1 designed the prop (to scale) and Charlie (Manzano Laser) cut it. I've assembled it with thin C.A. and it's ready to sand.

Signing on....

Can't wait to see what tricks you have up your sleeve for this one! The Albatros DVa is one of my favorite WWI fighters, I know there are tons of models of it, but it just looks so sleek, really ahead of it's time in terms of form and streamlining anyway.

Thanks for sharing!

I love the shapes of the Alby also. Quite a departure, in looks and character, from what I've been building.
BTW, the prop is an 18X15.

Jees Hammerd, you don't muck about.

I think Arazona Models do Lozenge Fabic in 1/6 Scale... Could be an option.

Get ready to field heaps of comments regarding Lozenge... Should be 5 colour for a DVa I think... With Salmon pink rib tapes.

This will be one to watch. I will be checking in... EVERY DAY!

Cheers,

Hugh

From what I've heard it is quite heavy and not easy to work with. I have never tried it myself, and at their prices and with their reputation, I never will.

I'm sure Hammerd will come up with his own unique solution. I hand cut templates for each individual colour when I did my P.R. D.VII. It came out great, but it sure was a lot of work.

Yes, 1/6. Can't remember the WS right now.

I've already downloaded every image they have of the DVa.

Prop is ready for a balance check and final sanding. I started with 60 grit on the die grinder, went to 80 grit, then hand sanded with 80 and 180 grit papers. The woods are maple and mahogany, like her full size Axial.

there are vinyl cutters available on ebay or amazon - I wonder if these could work with rolls of frisket (or other low tack films) to cut out the lozenge patterns? it would cost more that exacto blades, but ought to be a whole lot less time consuming.
either that or if someone like Callie Graphics could do the same? I asked a local sign printer about this a while back and I they never got back to me, but I think they could have cut the film.
