Question
rowing?

I have tryed searching here and nothing.. can anyone explain the programing used in this video.

Radio Control (RC) rowing boat powered by servos (0 min 34 sec)

Look like a fun thing to try, perhaps a kayak since im a kayaker..

Thanks.

No programming... two servos on each side, y-linked together. Probably 'rowed' by moving the control sticks back and forth.

if you click on the link, it discribes a throttle to servo mix. I was thinking just hooking it up and making a rowing action on both sticks... I will need a extra radio so not to hammer sticks to much.. I would try this on a foam floating board before investing huge time in building a wood row boat.

Is it two or four channel total? I know there are four servos, but can you get the oval action of the oar with only two? It's not very clear, but it looks like the lift and pull servos are not always moving in sync with each other.

There was some discussion on this last month...
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1284665

There does seem to be a mixer board involved in this particular boat.
That is how it is able to turn, then resyncronize the oar strokes...

Maybe that Arduino board is involved again...

yep, that was my thread

theres a google translated link in there with more information.. but suffice to say, it can be done by circulating the sticks. but it's done with a programmable IC. controlling the actual rowing movement hook the chip up to RX and the program takes over from there.

I have the mechanics of it all worked out, I know how the chip works, its just a really tiny PLC and that's music I can dance to. just need to get a hold of a chip and experiment at this point.. a raw Adriano can be had for around $30 and under. full development boards run around between $60 and $120, and there are all types of sensors and toys that can be added to them. radio shack sells a development/experiment kit for around $100 complete with a big ole thick book, a few sensors, and a servo or two.

apparently there is a "guy in Germany" who sells the preprogrammed chip set control boards for something like $100, but I have yet to find him in my travels on the internets.

so... yes.. I am working on developing a control board for this for this stuff, and when the time comes I hope to be some "guy in Virginia" making them available

like I said.. the big hurdle now is figuring out the programing.. the program will have the row function as a mapped function. two channel control will have a centered throttle stick. forward past center makes it go forward, pulling it back reverses the direction ( obviously ), rudder control slow or speeds up the left right bank of servos in that direction.

like I said.. its all programming at this point.

There are two other boards that I have seen people use...
One is the Dorkboard,... http://dorkbotpdx.org/

The other I keep wanting to call a Pico board, but I know that's not right...

I think your thinking of PIC as in Pic Microchips.
I have the Pic Kit 2 starter kit, but haven't got around to learning enough about programing it to do rowing. I am still working with "Hello World"

Gerald.

PICO is also valid as Programable Intigrated COntroller for the chip class.
