Gaui Hurrican 550 (CFS) or EXI 500 for my next heli?

I have gotten comfortable hovering my EXI 450 in all aspects and am just now starting FFF and figure 8's. As I get more comfortable flying, I want to start building another heli.

Allerc has a sale going right now on a Gaui Hurricane 550 CFS (Carbon Side Frames)for $200. I have read good things about Gaui, they just don’t seem to be near as popular as EXI or HK heli's.

I have a new Spartan Quark Gyro I picked up at a good price waiting for it and plan to put good gear in either one I get.

Is the Gaui 550 CFS sale price worth it? Would y'all say the Gaui 550 is better than the EXI 500?

Thanks in advance
Dave H.

I personally prefer Gaui to EXI, the only advantage EXI might have is that it's probably compatible with the Trex500 so parts support might be easier.

The Gaui is going to be slightly larger and therefore more stable.

The EXI500 and the HK500 are clones and you will have to replace a lot of parts to get anywhere close to the Align Trex 500....The Gaui Hurricane 500 is an original design by Gaui and is not a clone and you can get parts at Helidirect or Empire hobbies.....The Gaui 500 is much more easier to build than the EXI or the HK 500....The base kit for the Gaui is $80 for the 425 and the extension kit to upgrade to the 550 is under $40 so you can save money and extend to a 550 later if you want..

I did the 425 to 550 conversion and the upgrade only ran about 20 bucks. before main blades. I like the gaui mine is very stable compaired to my 450.

Electronics and battery will cost you more for the 550. But the 550 is going to fly better

That all depends on how you shop. I put DS821s on the cyclic I budget shopped and beatup the LHS guy for those LOL, a jr770 used *Thanks JustPlainChris* and a 9257 on the tail which for now is sufficient for my type of flying. I can not 3d at this point as im still new but yes it is very stable. All in all it was not to terribly pricey. Might be a different story if you were a hard core 3D'r

I decided to purchase the 550 CFS from Allerc.com. While it is in transit I am reading and watching the build videos on HeliFreak while trying to decide how to outfit it. I have read about some of the common/recommend upgrades:
CNC elevator
CNC pitch/roll arms
CNC head stop
CNC swash plate guide
Trex 600 landing gear and tail fin
Raptor 30 ball links
Head Hunter Heli big bearing upgrade?

Before I purchase these items I am waiting for my kit to arrive in hopes to make 1 or 2 big orders. My current plan is to use a Z20 980kv motor (basic sport flying), 550 blades, 15/50/20/61 gears, (if I remember correctly), and a new Quark gyro I have.

Two immediate questions I have are what servos do y'all recommend (using a Spektrum receiver), and do the Carbon Fiber Offset Servo Arms help set up the servo geometry?

Thanks in advance!

Personally, I'd suggest you fly it stock before doing any upgrades. Most of the guys upgrading either do so because they can afford it (not saying you can't) or because they notice a performance difference. As this sounds like your second kit heli and since you are only sport flying, I don't think you'll notice much, if any, difference.

I have raptor gear on mine. The holes matched up for mounting and they are a little stronger and wider which gives it a bit more of a presence
Druss is right I would fly it first before going through all the upgrades and the Z20 980Kv is the same motor im using with power to spare it seems.
