Christchurch NZ Earthquake

Sister in law, who had been over from New Zealand and staying with us for 2 months, is back home in Christchurch.

Only been back a week and they got hit with a 7.4 magnitude Earthquake!

Biggest they've had. Apparently the main shock lasted 40 seconds, and the entire city rolled up and down.

Had numerous aftershocks, some as high as 5.2.

Seems like most people are OK - but what a coming home present!

A BBC article...

Sister-in-law phoned us a few minutes after it happened - she was in the dark with no power at the time.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is any correlation here?

More than I can remember. But then again, I've spent 25 years or so in SoCal.

Oh oh! - I've dived (SCUBA) in Pupu Springs (Te Waikoropupu) on the South Island - does that count?

I have family in Christchurch - all OK, but they spent a cold winter night last night. Lots of damage in the city centre and infrastructure around the city.

7.4 is a whopper. NZ must be on solid ground or they'd mostly be homeless now. What's with the looting? I thought Kiwis were above that sort of thing.

Long since lost count of earthquakes. Dozen+ anyway. 4 here, where earthquakes you can feel almost never happen. At least 4 in Hawaii, and the rest in San Jose which is where I lost count.

Since Loma Prieta, earthquakes in the middle of the night wake me up a minute before they happen. Kinda spooky, kinda entertaining.

The official magnitude of the earthquake is now 7.1.

Here's some aerial video:

Now'd be a good time to be a bricklayer or stonemason in NZ.

[QUOTE][What's with the looting? I thought Kiwis were above that sort of thing./QUOTE]

It turned out to be two young guys breaking a shop window. That was the end of it. In NZ thats called looting, others would just have called it an attempted burglary.

Some of the Buildings damaged where up to 134 years old. In NZ thats old Christchurch was not on any known fault line... until now and had not previously experianced any major earthquakes.

I see today that the Christchurch Cathedral was undamaged, its a historic stone & brick building, but it had had major earthquake strengthening several years ago.

Our building codes here are fairly strict on the earthquake front. Were not called the "Shakey Isles" for nothing.
