Hobie:

All the Cockpit and canopy detail is AS IS STOCK !

Maybe the Chinse think they have the rest of the world Scared to Death !

Or that's how the "see" us ! sigh ...

Some "scale" sun glasses could have solved this issue !

skyboy:

Mine is currently sitting Back In The Box but I can tell you
it is LIGHTER than my 2 M Gerasis Fox !

It "feels" very light for it's size !

Does it really matter ?
There is little you can do about it other than make it heavier !

Hi Birdofplay,

what I can do is not buy it if it's too heavy. I want it for slope flying at a site with usually light winds so light weight is useful. The aim is to use the motor only very rarely to get out of jail.

Skyboy: Understood.
Mine is 3 lbs 1 oz with a 2200 3cell Lipo and
all the "tape" treatments that I've added.
But all it was is some Packing tape. A whole roll isnt that much !
I find it difficult to believe that I placed 1/2 lb of weight in just packing tape !
That is 1/2lb OVER what HK states the flying weight to be! ( 1150 gms - 2.53 Lbs )
I used one of their lipos too - that claim is bogus to be sure !

Ok now the maiden report:

I've had a very busy day, including a successful Maiden flight !

We headed out with sunny skys but we could see clouds coming in
from the coast which is only 40 miles away.

As we arrived the rain started.
A few minutes later we had a window and took it.
I have uploaded a video of the flight - see below.

With a fresh 2200 3s1p it climbs out acceptably.
CG seemed a bit far forward as mentioned by Petemac in his reports.

I may try 4s1p as the ESC manual says it's good for up to 4 lipo cells.

Mine also felt a little heavy on the right side but still flyable.
I will be checking the side to side balance this evening !

Overall though, I'd have to say I Like It !

All went well and I managed two flights and two good landings !
The second landing was nice and slow and looked kewel as both wheels
touched down on the grass.
The first landing was in tall grass after a hasty attempt to beat the rain down. see vid

My Elevator was at High Rate and needs to be dialed down a tad.

I will try to move the Cg back some or try smaller batteries.
I wonder how removing some of the solid foam behind the battery would effect fuse strength ?

No aerobatics attempted as the Rain was moving in while I was flying so
activity was curtailed for the rest of the day :-(
It was a flight worthiness day only !

I think we spent more time IN the truck out of the rain than we did flying !
Typical of Northwest weather here on the Columbia river.

Reqardless It's a keeper !

I cant wait to try it on our slopes.

Below are photos of my 2004 Gerasis Fox 2M
next to the HK 2.3M Foamy Fox.

My Gerasis 2M Fox is a full 1/2 lb heavier AUW with No motor !
I does NOT like being balanced too far back AT ALL !

So be careful with your Foamy version !

Hi all..

FOX ESC - mine failed today. engine wouldn't run at all. the only spare i have on hand is a 60a, so i'll have to use that for tomorrow until i can get another 30a in (stock for turnigy esc's has been terrible lately!)

last fms plane i had the esc broke within 2 flights.. given this came in an fms box, i'm assuming quality of elec's is not big on thier agenda.

still...the plane (after mods) is so noice to fly! I'm lovin it!!

Hey guys, any idea why the other thread is closed ? I'm fairly new to this.
Don't mean to be a bother.
Thanks: Kerry

No problem Pete, I was concerned I did something wrong. I do not type well so I usually do all with cap's lock on. Sometimes (post quick reply/ go advanced) removes all the cap's sometimes it comes up all caps?? I have been told it looks like I'm yelling (not the case).
Pete: you chased a plane into a swamp on an air matress ????? What about gators ??
I don't want to be in the same country as them things. Maybe I watch too much u-tube.
Bird is right, now we are all in one place. :-)

No gaters here mate!

Croc's (as we call them) are mainly found up far north Queensland and in northern territory etc but very rarely in largely populated area's like the main cities (I'm in Sydney). Having said that, i was very very afraid of the absolutely vicious looking duck that waddled its way down into the water as i approached with my blow up mattress...

re: motors... Before i saw the post that showed the original motor (thanks Bird for pointing that one out!!), i submitted an order for a few others. this is what i've ordered..

I think i'll have a play around with some of these, see if they they are any good. i'll probably also order an original replacement (the one Bird pointed out).

my overall preference would be to replace the Bell style with something like a nice turnigy SK, but for now i don't want to change motor mount too far from stock.

One other thing i am having trouble finding is a replacement nose cone/fold prop. I've ordered a bunch of different parts in this space to see what i can get working (dont need it yet.. just want to get a spare on standby). most of the fold pro/nose cones are designed for a normal shaft and not these screw shafts/bell motors, so it'll be interested to see if i can find something that works well.

maybe i'll check ebay sellers.

cheers
p

BTW Bird, i reckon you're on the money with that battery bay mod. i think i'll follow suit and do that as well. were you worried about any structural integrity loss when you did it - or does it look fine?

Yes I was worried a little bit.

I may use some thin, strong Hard ply or plastic and glue it flat across
whats left of that flat area under the canopy.

It's just foam and wing flex shouldnt impose much fuse "squishing" at that point
because of the Spar going thru.

I dont what else could be done in that area ?

Time will tell, however.
