Question
3mm vs 5mm LED - if you are not size constrained, any benefit to one or the other?

just out of curiosity, if size is not an issue and you could use either size - 3mm or 5mm LED, is 1 beneficial over the other?

tia,
bob

not really....im guessing 5mm may use more power, youd just have to check the datasheets

If weight is important, go with the 3mm. If visability is more important, go with 5mm. They generally put out more light.

Just packaging (the plastic part) is bigger, no difference inside.

If you need the light to enter a clear plate edge or a gap with lowest losses you focus it and play with the distance, angle, and position(s) to get an acceptable affect.

3 & 5 mm is the diameter that PRIMARLY affects the front diameter of the round, defuse, or convex that is the lens. The 3mm does have better cooling around the emitter if you drive it on its high voltage operating range which heat shortens its life. If you look directly into the emitter the 5mm is less harsh for comparable power emitters.

You can search large catalogs of led designs from Stanley, Osram, or Reseller distributor CML Chicago Miniature Lighting to get a production grade effect, dispersion, and color options. LEDs have many aspects that are bin able or designed in. A good electronics store makes most of these options and the binning rejects available to the consumer in small quantities, as we require.

As the simulation software SPEOS is cost prohibitive for simple objectives and requires solid data models. Usually mockup if the objective pieces works for me. I choose the real world results over developing modeling for basic optics up to 6 target fields for a single emitter in consumer products. I mock if representations are available even with the software and modeling capability at hand.
