Contest
Gator F3B in Florida - Feb 25, 26, 27, 2011

Announcing a special F3B contest to be held at Cocoa on the Space Coast Florida in early Spring 2011.
The goal is to support F3B in USA and grow interest on the East Coast and a successful contest attendance will raise funds for the new USA F3B team to go to China.

For 18 months we have tossed the idea around and Mike Lachowski has been instrumental in encouraging us Gatorland soarers to put it on. Now we need the support of the F3B community in USA to make it a success.

We have the great weather during the northern winter, the cheap airfares, cheap accomodation, great food and we are keen to expose the local Florida RC community to the wonders of F3B.

Mike Lachowski has offered to assist us to make this happen with equipment and logistics. We have an absolutely fabulous flying field kindly made available by the IRKS club near Cocoa Beach with a large band of willing club members to come out and help with timing, Base B duties, lunchtime stuff etc. The IRKS club have really got behind the project and they will be ably supported by my club the Orlando Buzzards to make this a smoothly run event.

The event will be flown over three days with a Friday practice and Saturday and Sunday contest. (Format for 3 days is open for discussion and suggestion of the F3B community.)
The event will be held at the IRKS flying field at Cocoa FL (The power flying will be suspended at this field while we have the contest.)
The dates will be 25th, 26th and 27th Feb 2011.
Due to the Space Shuttle Endeavour being scheduled to launch on Saturday 26th at 4:19pm we have an alternate site booked to fly at in Apopka at the RCACF flying field as necessary

We would really like to encourage a lot of participation from the very strong West Coast F3B'ers as well as those in the North and Central USA. Heck we'll even invite the Canadians, Australians, Kiwis and Europeans to come join us for some fun in the sun while your winter is still on. We are expecting that the newly selected USA Team might make good use of the event as a practice before next years Worlds.

Please indicate on this thread if you can come. We have started a list of those that have indicated their willingness to participate so far:
Mike Lachowski
Reto Fiolka
Glauco Lago (I think)
David Klien,
Kyle Paulson
Gordon Buckland
Kris Van Nostran
Tom Watson
Thomas Akers
Tom Keisling
(All the Toms) or is there more????
Mike Smith
Rick Eckel - our CD
We also have some other keen participants here in Florida who will come out of the woodwork to fly the event and experience F3B.

Please chime in on this thread everybody with your thoughts and lets get the Gator F3B contest rolling. (And yes we do have real live Gators on the flying site at Cocoa. )

This looks like fun, and anybody that flies F3K as well should look into extending their Florida vacation. We'll be having the 4th Annual San Felasco Hand Launch Glider Festival the weekend before, just up the road in Alachua.

The choosing of this date revolved around that very thought Dave.
We believe some of the DLG and B guys will see this as a prime opportunity to have an 11 day soaring vacation with an F3K and an F3B event 4 days apart.:D
A veritable soaring smorgasbord - in Florida.
Where in February it will be sunny and warm and the lift will be endless.
While the North is still freezing in ice and snow.
We're gonna have fun with a soaring speed fest in Cocoa.

OK, the big thing to make this happen, is to get the equipment out there. There are an abundance of F3B winches in Socal, so we have been able to provide them to competitors traveling long distances. With the charges that Airlines have been making, it is cheaper to ship our equipment.

Is there an organizer with a large storage area so that we can ship our planes, winches, and line well in advance? How about batteries? Can someone look into setting up a battery rental with the local interstate, napa, or equivalent....?

Hey David,
I have a storage area available in Sanford at my work location (Sanford, FL 32771) including forklift etc. I can also move equipment and planes from Sanford to the flying site in my truck. I am sure if we have more than one truck load we have other club members who will also help with that. The battery rental is a different question. I will look into that. Is this a normal sort of thing that Napa does for just one weekend?

Would love to come!

My concern would be the normal weather pattern during this time. Can you tell us the likelihood of rain this time of year? Here in Ca. I would say it's about 20-30% in Feb. I would take that risk if it's similar in Fl. Any thoughts here?
