@ masao: yes, the project is evolving rather fast. That's why I recommend re-reading the blog before you start the build.

@ Pac3r: It's described in #IV:

How to switch to X-flightmode?

By default the brain is configured to fly in +-mode. Those who want to go to X-mode have to edit the arducopter.pde:
- start arduino0018.exe
- load the ArduCopter sketch (like you did before upload)
- you can edit the file now. Find the line "// Motor variables".
Below that line you'll see
#define FLIGHT_MODE_+
//#define FLIGHT_MODE_X

Uncomment the first line by putting two slashes in front of it.
Remove the two slashes in front of the second line. The code should look like this:
//#define FLIGHT_MODE_+
#define FLIGHT_MODE_X

Save that file and upload it to the board. You'll be flying in X-mode from now on.

@ John: I wish you all the luck you need! And yes: all instructions I posted here don't come out of nowhere - I'm an experienced n00b.

Argh!!! You guys are going to send my broke!

Looks like a fantastic project gentlemen. Norbert, your documentation is so good that after I had a successful TriWii build, I think I'm ready for this one!

Subscribed and building,

Thanks (I think.......)

George.

I am still not clear about things:
1. Position Hold can be activated from Tx?
2. Altitude Hold can also be activated by Tx?
Does it require additional two channels?

As to the soldering. Did you know you can solder the pin and solder the circuit board it goes into and still not solder the two items together?
When I finished the first board I carefully checked each joint and re-did many.
I was scared to use too much heat so on the second board I let the iron sit a tiny bit longer and they came out much better on final examination.
Tips? I would say go slowly and keep the iron clean using a sponge often.
Re-check each connection as you want to catch problems before getting any further into the build.
Now whats next? Maybe use the computer to connect it up?
Let the games begin...........

@ rcblue & mr. thumb:
Haha - gotcha! Welcome to the club.

@ Pac3r: Sometimes you don't see the forest because of all those trees. (German say)

@ Jim: Grrreat! Thx a lot.
Sometimes I really wonder how you manage to gather all those infos and bring them into shape and handy pieces. I breathed a lot of inspirations from your Mega Thread. In fact it was the ignition for me to give a the ArduCopter a try.

@ John: After controlling all those soldering points you can plug in the usb (with escs unplugged), install the usb-to-serial driver and look what's happening.
You should have blue leds on both boards shining and after some seconds there should be a green one at the nose of the oilpan (opposite to the connectors) which indicates the successful boot of the board.

Next step uploading the firmware...

Yes, you'll need the tx for these functions. How else should it be done?
Maybe there's a feature in the configurator to bundle functions so you can switch to PH/AH by 1 switch at the same time.
But that's not implemented yet.

Good news!

The core team developed a new firmware version alpha 1.3
Looks really stable and adds some more features.

I'm planning to make the new files available on the weekend after I've done some more test flights.

This time it comes in 2 flavours. One already pre-configured for X-mode, the other one for +-mode to make it easier for beginners - you won't have to hack the code on your own...

Thanks for info.
Year what else...
I thought the toggle switch can handle those functions by turns, and it requires only one channel.

I am looking forward to your report on Firmware alpha 1.3.

My parts have been almost all arived except right angle pins.
I hope they will be arrived tommorow so that I can start soldering this weekend.

Got my GPS today after lipoly.de sent me only the adapter without the GPS chip but charged for the adapter + chip.

My magneto/compass came 2 days ago - but I had to realize that I ordered the wrong one.

Oh well, patience is a virtue...

I'm very surprised about this, I never had a single problem with them!?
Not the same story with cncmodellsport.de who screwed me big time the second time I ordered from them...

Thx for the hint, Bob. Fortunately lipoly.de had 1 left in store so I could reserve it immediately. They apologized and sent a complete adapter in only 2 days including a small bag of fruit gums. That soothed my anger.
