Since a new page has rolled, just a quick reminder for anyone who might have missed them...

You can find the picture set from the 2010 Holiday Parade of Lights here.

OT - the Americas' Cup

Jeeze... Don't it just figure!

We had this one pretty much sewn up and in our pocket and the Board of Supes has to go meddle... So bye-bye Americas' Cup.

I had been hoping The Lake and Club could have jumped onto this bandwagon, maybe hosting some EC-12 events or something, but now it appears we won't even be on the tour ticket.

Scramble to land (er save) the America's Cup

I think the Mayor and the Board of Supes in SF have been remarkably accomodating on the topic of hosting the America's Cup. Everything I have heard suggest that BMWO/LE has gotten pretty much everything they wanted in negotiation for the bid - which is remarkable.

While I don't know what the expectations are in the other towns that have put in a bid to host, Frankly for BMWO LE to back out of SF at this point would be an insult given that it seemed "sewn up".

Thanks for the pictures and the video. It's cool to see the boats lit up in the Christmas spirit. It sounds like you had a good time despite the rain.

I'd have to say that what I liked most about it was the purely whimsical nature of it. There was nothing to be won or lost, except for the pure pleasure that comes from celebrating with friends.

I set out to shoot video, but I first decided to shoot some long still exposures, just to see what effect we would see. I knew that Craig and others would get clear shots by using a flash, so I went for pure fantasy. Here they are, just for fun!

Mom pounced and grabbed her by the scruff a second or two later...

Turns out their Grandfather on their Dad's side, a skilled professional woodworker, was a SFMYC member during the late 30s and throughout the 40's or so and had build a number of large freesail boats.

Guess then sawdust n' salt got into the blood.

TechShop SoMa, (San Franciso) has opened its doors...

For the "workshop challenged" or "tool challenged" amongst us here in San Francisco and the North Bay...

TechShop® San Francisco has just opened and is beginning it's rollout. They are at 926 Howard Street (Howard between 5th and 6th).

Check out the equipment list, nearly all the "toys" you could ever want.

For the South Bay folks, the Menlo Park TechShop® has been open for over four years and another is planned for San Jose soon.

There is going to be an open house at the Howard St. location on Friday, January 14, with a lecture by Kevin Kelly, former editor and publisher of Whole Earth Review and later editor of Wired magazine which he helped found.

I was looking at Craigslist tonight, and someone in the Richmond / Seacliff area is selling 3 R/C boats (1 tug, and 2 gas hydro's). I am not the seller, and I don't know the seller. I just thought that someone who follows this thread might be interested, and is probably local.

The tug can be found here......

50 inch 25cc Hydro

35cc Hydro

Hope this helps someone.

Saturday was the first weekend day where we've had some nice weather for a while, since the New Year, I believe. Yeah, I know, Schrott and the rest of you guys are probably laughing your heads off at that statement... What are we complaining about... you're at minus 10. It's just more fun when you are dry and your boat isn't getting pounded in a "scale gale" like the poor little tug back at Wooden Boats on Parade.

But it did mean there was a bit of a turnout amounst the power boaters who use Spreckels Lake as well a a nice crownd of spectators and at least one family getting their first r/c boat in the water.

There will be more to come as I edit...

Yep, there was a real nice modelers' turnout and a pretty constant spectator flow, with many staying to enjoy the boats and weather into the afternoon. Since no one from the sail-side came out to play, the power folks ran 'til long past 2:00 or so.

Yeah Aero, this one really cooked off!! The power leads melted completely off the board, solder puddles. As far as I know the boat is structurally ok though.

Otherwise it was a wonderful day at The Lake. A nice turnout for a Sunday with most folks bringin' multiple boats. Sooooooo... what was your excuse for bein' a no-show???

By-the-by, Bob_SF was out with his Laser got to chat a bit about the Edith E. for a few.

I'll get some more up soon...
It might be a couple of days as I have some web site work to do and a dentists appointment with the drill.

Finally getting the time to do the edits and posting the pictures for January 23. They are here as well as here, The Bruce Lee sculling shell.

2010 Tug Fest Pictures...

Recovered some missing images of the 2010 Tug Fest a couple of days ago.

As the Tug Fest had its own thread predating this one, I posted them here over on that thread... Enjoy

Frostbite Regatta will be held Saturday Februay 12th, in the clubhouse beginning around noon.

The Frostbite Regatta is an indoor static display of current projects and completed boats- It's a great opportunity to share ideas and see what fellow modelers have been working on in their shops. If the weather is as nice on the 12th as it is today, I'm sure a lot of the boats on display will make their way onto the water for some running time as well.

KMOT, this is during free run time and, in the main, the guys running are "the Irregulars" (folks who call Spreckels Lake their home-waters and run there regularly, almost every day in fact, but don't associate with the SFMYC). We can run mixed types together now, but previously... well long story, and honestly... mumble mumble mumble... capice?

Craig,
Thanks for those great pictures that you had taken of the regulars and the irregulars.
Yes, I will check the link re: the updates of the lake and the runs.
Will post it here when the next "night run" will take place.
I will check with the "night runners" and see the best time to run.
I think Wednesdays are the days that we typically set up but will keep you posted.

Thanks,
Julio.

As far as I know, Saturdays used to be just for the Nitro's and Gasoline Boats from 10 am -1pm which we followed or tried to police with the outsiders.
Lately, we have steamers, little electric toy boats, sailboats, electric airboat, fast electric boats,Gasoline boats,Nitro boats.... ALL running at the same time in one area. I know..... that one day, someone out there will sink because they are on the path of getting hit with the power boaters running at their scheduled time of 10-1pm. It would be nice if we can perhaps have a sit down and perhaps better organize the pond on who, where and what time to run for each classes.
That's 8 different types of RC boats running at the same area in one area.
Not trying to make waves. Just putting in my 2 cents.
Julio.

Then perhaps, we can run past 1pm and run with the sailboats.
Run and stay away from the Sailers after 1pm. That, I agree. After 1pm.... Continue the power boat runs with the sailers providing we stay away from their path.

Remember though... The 10:00 am to 1:00 pm rule for Gas & I/C boats, just like the noise abatement (muffler) regulations and the other things on the signs are Park & Rec. regulations. Those are not negotiable for any of us.

Most of the rest of those so-called "rules" started out as functional, working "gentlemens' agreements" and "accommodations" worked out over the years since the Second World War between the different sailors who used/using the Lake. The contentious "rules" were some folks imposing their ideas about what "model yachting" and "model boating" is all about onto other people and the public.

As it stands now, yes, the steam and electrics can be on the Lake at the same time as the sailors, (They always could - the power from 10am-1pm and sail from 1pm - 4pm 'rule' was one of those 'gentlemens' agreements' that was really only binding on club members but was usually honored by pretty much everyone using the lake for model boating. ) - just give 'em a wide berth.

I don't think it'll be much as of an issue with the gas boats... Frankly, I think the gas boats just plain scare many of the sail people to death.

I'm astonished that the locals put up with those loud boats in the morning as it is- there are apartment complexes right across the street. If people started running them all day long I dont think it would go over very well.

Habenero...

The current gas models are very quiet compared to the boats that traditionally ran on the lake in the 70's, 80's and later. The city regulations are now 60 decibels at 50 feet* which is mostly quieter than the traffic going by on Fulton Street to the north of the lake. The non-members who regularly run their gas go-fastie's there are very aware of the regulation and the neighborhood noise issue so they are determined about staying under the noise limit. I know of a number of cases where a muffler has failed or end-cap blown off where the boat was immediately pulled from the water and beached until it was repaired and quiet again, even it that ended the running day for someone. Racer59 (Julio) is very conscientious about this. This is also why one of the 'gentlemens' agreements' worked out over the years was that gas boats were to be run on the southern half of the lake, away from the residences on Fulton St.

Actually there were a number of reasons for running from the southern / JFK Drive side pit area...
  1. When you run from the north/Fulton Street side; the sun in almost always in your eyes creating a control/safety issue (in my opinion).
  2. There is much less of an issue with unattenuated noise reaching the apartments buildings and homes, thanks to the added distance.
  3. It made avoiding the sail boats, who traditionally run on the north side of the lake, close-in to the shoreline much easier, as well as avoiding the buoys permanently
    moored in mid-lake.
  4. (added-1/31) I had forgotten! This also falls under Park and Rec. Department's posted "Thou Shalts." "Power Boats On South Side of Lake Only." The signs are still up, though somewhat mossy! (See image below...) So it seems hours may indeed be limited.
Back 20-40 years ago, mufflers weren't required and there was serious gas-powered racing on the lake, including some national-level, speed events under SFMYC sponsorship, like the "Shelby Cup," a nats-level outboards race, so noise comparatively, isn't the issue it used to be.

* the old reg, circa 1980s, was 90db at 100 feet and it had been unrestricted before that!

I'll put a map together that covers some of 'agreements' that have been in place over the years.

*************************************************

So, here's a map of the Gas/Nitro-powered exclusion zones as mandated by SF Park and Rec. in RED. Gas/Nitro, as you will remember, can only run during restricted hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10:00hrs to 13:00hrs.

Everyone has pretty much been keeping to the old "gentlemens' agreement' to run only on the south side of the lake for noise and other reasons though they could run in the yellow, "caution advised" areas, they generally choose not to,

ps. Just so we are clear, the map is NOT a club document but I based it on my memories of one I created for the club many years ago and was based on an earlier, cruder map that remained in use through at least the late 80's/early 90s.

Yep Bob! When yer rite, yer rite!

I shot these so you could know of our suffering out here.

(The last shot, by the way, shows part of the Americas' Cup course and, the proposed windward leg is just above the trees paralleling the shoreline past the Fishermens' Wharf, Marina Green area (old 'Washerwomen's Cove) up past to where Crissy Field used to be and then turns back with the leeward leg going in back (to the north) of Alcatraz Island.)

All-in-all a quiet day on the lake. A few of the guys were out today and maybe about a half dozen boats. I had to get some very specific shots of the Clubhouse and by the time I was done, most of the boats were gone. Still a nice day.

This seems to be a down weekend - there is a marathon Sunday. That means all vehicle access to the Lake is closed Lake. There was some talk that the road might open up by 11:00hrs or so, but no confirmation. We'll have to wait and see.

I went to the exploratorium web cam and saw what a BEAUTIFUL day it was there today, checked the temp and thought to myself 74 degrees. I should go take a picture of our lake. But then you all know what ice cubes look like so I didnt.
Hope you enjoyed it!

So who enforces the 15 MPH speed limit? The wake those boats are putting out must be faster than the posted speed limit!

The cops would be the folks who handle that, the Club has no interest in being the authorities. City set up the rules and like most rules there always some Scofflaws in the population. Mostly need to respect everyone that uses the Lake and try to get along without conflict. If it floats it is welcomed and maybe it is admired for it's engineering, finish or even it's sheer audacity.

The 15-mile-per-hour speed limit applies to Gas/Nitro-powered ONLY per the sign. Electrics and steamers are are not subject to the speed limit.

The statement is accurate as far as it goes... especially since a certain past-Commodore and a few others used to brag how they had "helped" Park and Rec. write the rules and openly acknowledged that the rules were written to drive Gas/Nitro boaters from the Lake. Not to mention the whole Sail vs every-kind-of-powerboat feuds inside the club.

It should be pointed out here that the Club used to be a power in most forms gas/nitro racing, even had outboard national level events, forget which class, on the lake years ago. The Shelby Cup, named after Jay Shelby, was a Club prize race run on the lake for a number of years. No more.

Interesting thing, as I was told recently that my membership in the club, though not continuous, goes back further than anyone elses' except definitely one and possibly two other members. Some of the guys running those boats, who refuse to join the club, go back much further than I do on the lake and are, apparently, much more deeply entrenched in the hobby than most folks in the club. A number are also ex-members.

Exactly, shame that some club members, have tended to be the worst offenders vis-à-vis respecting the rights of others on the lake.

The Bruce Lee sculling shell... Star rows lake, can Elvis be far behind?

Another late post from January 23, (the rest of the photos from the 23rd are here).

Julio's (Racer59) model sculling shell with Bruce Lee manning the sweeps.

Thought that since I have some detail shots of the mechanism, it justified a separate photo set and posting. It has a very realistic looking sweep pattern.

I hope this will inspire or give ideas to some of you guys who have been thinking of doing row boats!

Sunday, Fenruary 6 - Part I

Sunday was a beautiful day and a few folks did show up at the lake despite the roads being closed for the marathon. I got there nearly an hour after they barricades were supposed to be down, oh well... Happened across a back way in and took it

I'll have some more to post as I catch up with things. More to come and they are posted below in #487.

Late Post - Saturday, January 29th - All posted :)

Saturday, Jan 29 was a soggy mess, somber as the scowl from some ancient Puritan preacher in his high pulpit; dark ashen-filtered light and no visible sun, even at noon. Low, oppressive roiling overcast and fog oozing down from iron-domed skies that hovered so close and tight or'head you could almost reach out and touch them. Even the RoboMallard's cybernetic nose was dribbling from the clammy, gray, drizzle that floated on heavy, leaden air between dark and brooding cyclopean pines and scrub that loomed over the cold, slate waters of the lake laden with ethereal menace...

Still - a number of the Irregulars showed to ply the hard, oily waters...

Also trying the waters of the lake we're a couple of gentlemen down from Lake Tahoe where, they say, model boating has pretty much collapsed!! Can't think of a lot of places I would rather run a boat...

They brought down a couple of the prettiest looking, scratch built Star 36s it has ever been my pleasure to see! All fine woods and hand rubbed! Wow!

On the the images from 2/5 & 6...

SFMYC Club meeting on Saturday as well... Board @ 10:00hrs / General Membership @ 11:00hrs // FrostBite Display Regatta starts @ 13:30hrs (It will probably look a lot like the interior displays from the "Wooden Boats on Parade," after the exterior portions of WBOP got rained out.)

She is based on the ProBoat Pro Boat Coast Guard Lifeboat 30" RTR (unfortunately now discontinued); Proboat's Photo Galleries and Horizon Hobbies'

There was also an almost identical version form Midwest (again discontinued), KMOT did a build of it here, but in Canadian colors.

(Based on the USCG 47' MLB made by Textron Marine) Large pdf Customer Data Sheet here (4.8mb)

There is a good review with real boat documentation here.

Here are some more photos of her and VSpeed's conversion, a model of San Francisco's Police Dept.'s Marine One.

Day of the Flying Boat...

Well, I'm still trying to catch up... have last weekend to go though and finish, but getting there...

Saturday was glorious at the lake, warm, in the 70's, and there was a nice turnout of the gas/nitro "go-fastie" contingent; a number of folks and boats from out of town.

The Frostbite came off with out a hitch down in the Clubhouse.

Sunday was pretty nice too, until the fog moved in at about 13:10hrs and dropped the temperature at the lake by 20 degrees in about as many minutes. Gotta love the fog. I'll get the images up as quickly as I can.

S.F. construction site discovery: 2 old ships buried since 1800's

Quote:
When engineers working near Candlestick Park last March drilled deep into the ground for soil samples, they pulled up chunks of wood and figured it was an old pier.

They had no idea it was a century-old ship, let alone two.

Hi Craig
This may sound odd , but do you do requests ? I saw this image,I believe
it was on your clubs website, of a photo taken inside of all the Santa
Barbara class boats sitting in their stands in two rows - and that picture
always blew me away ! Our club here in Chicago races this class boat , so
I really enjoyed seeing all those S/B's - would it be possible some day to
snap some more pics of all those S/B's and post 'em up here ?
While I am thinking about it - I met two of your guys last year when our
club hosted the S/B Nationals here in Chicago - they made the drive here
to come play with us -so a big HELLO to "Styling Rick" and Mr. Stiller !

Thanks !
Allan

You bet... Masts like a denuded forest! Ships lashed together and used as housing, shops and hash-houses. LOL, the good ol' days! The Barbary Coast, the Committee of Vigilance, honestly crooked mayors, who could ask for better !

Thorsail -

I have to do some interiors of the clubhouse sometime in the next few weeks, so sure, no problems, be glad to.

Best to All

February: Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th

Still behind on the pic guys, srry, but getting there.... and I was out on the lake today so I do have pics for the 20th...

So anyway, Saturday was , period! Raining cats and dogs, windy and 40 degrees. Needless to say, nobody running on the lake. (Remember the scale Force Ten northern gales that sent lil'Toot to the bottom back at WBOP?)

Sunday (today) were another story altogether... warm, mid 50s or better, wonderful sun, almost no wind in the wind shadow that sometimes forms on the south side of the lake, perfect for the small electrics, but a fairly nice breeze blowing in the mid and northern lake areas perfect from sail and a couple of boats took advantage of the conditions.

Also, today was a very busy day on the power-boat side of the lake with as many as 14 boats out at the same time at one point. There were a lot of newcomers, in addition to the usual crowd of "The Irregulars." Saw some folks that I'd talked to in the past had bought themselves a boat (RTRs) and come back to play.

I will get pics up as soon as I can!

When I get bored, I check out craigslist. Today someone in Lake County has a Newport 12 Meter listed. The description is .....

8'tall 6'longR/C Sailboat Newport12meter - $700 (lake county)

Fibreglas hull production boat very high quality made in Newport Beach Ca. 2 sets of sails and 2 masts with protective mast and sail holder. includes saIL CONTROL UNIT. no radio

The add can be seen here....

I am not the seller, and I don't know the seller. I just occasionally go by Spreckels to watch the boats, and thought that someone would be interested.

Any issues or did they have the frequency board out?
