rwood,

I hope you guys can find the good samaritan's tug and recover it for him.

If the winds were 60+mph that would make the scale wind speed of your storm apocalyptic for the equivalent full size storm!

Great posts....thanks....wish I could of been there too.

Just a thought...my resuce tug and 1:24 schooner has no floatation...not enough room for it below...so I have a hatch with styro on the underside with kite string line attached that can float off if the boat goes down to mark her and let me pull her up to the surface....I hope I never need to use it.

It's in the works, but it's going to be a major challenge. We are going to need to get one (preferably two) guys into scuba gear and wetsuits to search for it. It went down in 12 feet of near-zero visibility water, and it's less than 12" long.

The reason for the poor visibility is the nature of the water: treated sewage.

Any volunteers?

Well, The water is well pretty zapped, biologically speaking, before it gets there and it is also diluted with water from a spring, the output from which is supposedly dedicated to keeping The Lake filled.

None the less, I believe that Spreckels is, as are the Chain of Lakes ponds, designated as aerification and 'settling ponds.'

Well will put it to the Powers to Be, but I figure we will be there anyway if weather does not catch us. So it will be an OFFICIAL Annoucement as of now that the Christmas Parade of Lights will be on Dec. 18th at 1845hrs at Lakeside Spreckles Lake, Golden Gate Park. Come one come all with a Lighted Boat and decorated if that is your style.

Sounds like a lot of fun to see christmas lights on the boats. I can't make it as I will be at Disneyland with my family. Take a lot of pics.
P.S. I just started my Model Slipway Wyeforce tug build. Hopefully it will be done for next years tug events.

Well after some discussion it has been decided that 1845 hrs is too late so the Start Time is to be 1700 hrs (5:00 pm to you non-military types). So guess it is time to go out in the shop and figure how to light up the ship. See you all there!!!!!!!!!

Sounds great, CaptLee- 1700 is plenty dark to start!

Now, a search of all the local craft stores for small, battery operated string lights, snowmen, santas, reindeer, etc.

new lesson for me... NO MORE FLYING IN THE LAKE WITHOUT FLOATS!!!!!

Whoever made it out to the lake tonight for the night run saw me dive down to save my little heli due to the swashplate giving out 10 seconds into the flight. Spreckels Lake is as dirty as described.

visit

Well it looks like we will get to come to see San Francisco finally. You guys doing anything between the 9th and the 13th of December at the lake? Were staying at one of the hotels on fishermans wharf at the above dates. My luck it will be rainy, foggy and cold, but coming from Iowa it should be like spring. It has been halfway nice for this time of year here but the cold is coming and I wish it were in the summer but we take what we can get. My wife needs a break from the mortgage nitemare so here we come. I wish I could see the parade of lights but being on the 18th I think Im out of luck on that one. LMK

Saturday, 12/11 at 11am is a general meeting- they generally last about an hour. Please swing by and visit the clubhouse for a tour! While no "formal" running events are scheduled for that day, often people will bring boats to run before and after the meeting so you may get to see some boats on the water too. Be sure to introduce yourself when you are there!

Craig I doubt it would work my small Blade cx3 strains under the heft of a flycam2 (and the vibration makes it unwatchable) with the hero you would have to have a fairly large heli (like a t-rex) to lift that thing.

I'm not sure... but it'll work. I go the GoPro Hero and it works perfectly fine! So I assume it could carry 3.3 ounces. I see the blade SR struggle a bit, but nothing to serious, its better with my Blade 400 as I don't notice the weight in flight.

Let me add floats to my heli before I fly over the lake.

Habanero, you have to make sure your blades are properly balanced and your shafts are perfectly straight. With that, you also have to make sure the camera is securely mounted... I got it to work before, and thats with the GoPro. I think Flycam is lighter by like an ounce and a half?

Found some battery powered lights in Target, 15 lights, 4 AA battery required, $6.99 for solids, $7.99 for twinklers, picked up multicolored but had a pretty good range of types. Also in case of weather there is no Plan B so if it is raining we ain't going to be there. Also picked up a set of fisherman's gloves, waterproof and warm, made out of skindive suit material. Will come in handy later in season as well.

No prob...

The HD is the same form factor and weight as the older Heros with the added advantage with the new software upgrade that it can be attached to it's flight platform inverted and will automatically properly erect the image. This should make it a lot easier to mount.

My GpHD is tad heavier with mount and a tad bulkier which makes it tricky to mount -especially using waterproof case - but a 400 might do it.

The coaxils are much more stable if you can pull it off with a collective pitch I'll bow in your honor sir.

oh... that explains it... Its going to be definitely heavy with the case on the coaxial and Blade CP or SR. However, in my opinion, the SR is quite stable with the camera mounted on it than it was on the CP. I'll see what the flight is like when the camera in the case is mounted on the Blade 400. But I have seen people do it with nearly unnoticeable flight runs.

My main concern would be the bottom clearance and proper location for cg. Mounting it sans case and at a proper angle to view the ground (water) would take a customized mount the stock ones are big honking things.

mounting is always easy... the CG is definitely the big problem... I always managed to mount it at about a 35-45 degree angle in front of the skids for the Blade CP. For the Blade 400, I did it on the back facing forward parallel to the tail boom brace. For the Blade CX2, that was the most interesting mount I ever did. I took out the fuselage and mounted the camera dead center under the shafts. I extended the landing gears with the training gears I had from the Blade CP. Flight times were shortened to about 5(?) minutes and take offs were slow as you can feel youre putting in more throttle to take off. The camera was held together by velcro ties and a little bit of tape for safety.

Let me play around with my GoPro and fly it around my neighbourhood... I havent actually used mine in a while.

If all fails, maybe we'll buy a long pole and attach it to that... It gives amazing accuracy and it is a lot more safe!

Well it is just a little over a week until the Holiday Lights Niterun and am curious if everyone is ready for it. Got lights on the barge, tug lights up and running, backup tug lights OK, Charging the Monterey so the Vintage bunch is represented. figured the Springer could use a set, ended up tearing the shop apart finding the ones I bought for it. It only took 2 days to get it back into order and now have to install them on the boat.
So if the Good Lord is willing and the Lake doesn't rise will be there with Bells on. Pray for a no-rain day!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I started rigging the lights a couple of days ago and found 10' strings of battery operated LEDs at Wal Mart for $6.00 each, which I thought was a pretty good price. Similar lights at Target were the same price for 8' strings, but those would have been too short.

I added a tang at the mast base to hook the mast light string, and drilled one extra 1/8" diameter holes in the mast crane for the top of the string. The front white lights are on a nylon string so that it can stretch and flex and not interfere with the tensioned wire fore stay in the jib luff. The blue string just runs up the back stay and hooks to the mast crane. I had to make 12 new wire hooks to fasten the strings.

Because each string has a three-'C' cell battery pack attached, the next step will be to cut and re-wire the strings to run off a single battery pack which will go down inside the hull. If I can find a pico switch in time, I can make the lights switchable from my radio set

I thought stringing lights on my sailboat would be a lot easier than it has turned out to be!

I'd hate to be the bearer of bad news because the messenger usually gets shot...
But I was just watching the news and they said theres a possibility it is going to start raining Friday and itll go through the weekend. Is this going to be a rain or shine event?

Today's forecast for the week shows the rain arriving Wednesday and staying through Friday... if it rains Saturday, I'll be staying home

Vince has the RIGHT Attitude, if it is raining figure everyone stays in out of it, if it is just threatening we can make the decesion at Lakeside. But my forecast says it will be out of here on Friday so figure it is a go for Sat., but it all depends on the Rain Gods. See You at the Lake!!!!!!!!

Morning Vince, just wanted to say hi to someone who lives so close to me, I am in Oakland. Not a SFBC member, but I am watching closely, plan to participate next spring. Have only built one model so far, tried to start a thread but it is somehow "locked" so I gave up...

It was these very same negative vibes that caused it to rain at WBOP...

C'mon! Think positive!

Tim B. Looking forward to you participating in events next year. You are certainly welcome to participate in the lighted boat parade this coming weekend, member or not.

Hi Tim!
You're welcome to join us at Sprekles or at Lakeshore park in Newark on Sundays.
Today's weather forecast is rainy through the weekend... let's hope things change. I've spent too much time wiring my boat to cancel!

that was caused by wind/waves. not by rain alone!

Sorry you won't be able to make it, Hab.

I just was looking at SF craigslist and someone in Berkeley has just listed a 56" "pond yacht" for sale. The description says it has a glass hull & servos installed. It looks good in the photos. It's not my ad, and I don't know the seller. I just thought someone reading this thread might be interested. You can find the ad here.......

I just found a "Baltic Sea Trawler" model in the Tools listings. It's located in San Rafael. You can see it here.... http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/tls/2110679505.html

Once again, it's not mine & I don't know the seller.

Leds and wonderful welcome

I found a short set of colored leds (5 foot) at walgreens $6 3 c cells but Im sure it could be modified for aa or aaa batteries. I also wanted to thank all of you for the great welcome and the opporunity to sit in on your meeting and meet you all. I also want to thank you for the chance to play in your lake. I would invite you all to come and play in ours but more than likely its thick enough to walk on. Three degrees when we got back. Our flights were good except for the navy pilots and their aircraft carrier landings, LOL I think my biggest complaint would be the $43.00 a day parking at the hotel. I don't think I could pay that much here in three years added together for all the parking I do. Anyway I had a great time Thanks ever so much

You are more than welcome, Bob! Next time you visit, if you have a choice, consider the Seal Rock Inn, just up the hill from the Cliff House. 5 minutes from our clubhouse, and free parking. Excellent food, too.

On lights: Here's the best deal around: $4.99 at Orchard Supply. Takes 3 AA batteries, and has an on/off switch that could be controlled with a micro servo if you wanted. I did no soldering in the photo above:

Rob Will drive in to the Park regardless of weather, boats in truck, refuse to run in another TYPHOON, weather folks say the weather will break Sat. Late so we might get a run in. Will be there regardless since it was my Crazy Idea in the first place.

I wish I could be there for it. Looks like it's going to be fun. top heavy --- whats that. By the way someone might want to bring a fishin pole with a treble hook and weight hooked to it. Might be a chance to make some money retrieving boats!

Backup Plan for Saturday Night?

So, Captain Lee: You know you can find anything you want on the Internet, right? I've been looking for a weather report for Saturday evening that calls for light breezes and dry conditions, but so far, no joy.

Have a back-up plan? How about worst-case being we bring all of our lit-up ships into the clubhouse and turn out the lights in the building? Might make an amazing photo, if nothing else.

If anyone wants to get some extra "Christmas light boat parade" time in, I'll be at the Lucchesi Pond in Petaluma this Friday fom 4-6 PM. Forecast says rain but you know how these weather reports go sometimes...

Sunset is due around 4:51pm. K-mart (and hobby town USA) is conveniently located directly across the street if you need access to cheap boat lights or spare parts.

Well the Powers That Be have decided that the Clubhouse is the backup plan. I will pickup some Donuts and try to figure out the Coffee Maker so we can drown our sorrows while there. Still refuse to run in another TYPHOON but will probably run something just to say I did so. See You All at the LAKE!!!!!!!!!!
Not ready for the media yet is my feeling, but if some shows up we will make them welcome.

Aero, you have raised the bar for personal decorations on a model or even a full size vessel. You all have fun there and get us photos please wether they be on the water or clubhouse. Should be a fun and entertaining time.

We're trying... we'll eventually slide northwestward toward the Aleutian Trench, near the coast of Alaska; over a period of perhaps twenty million years?

I was thinking some sort of Quantum Mechanics approach might work faster, but I don't have the math for it.

Wish you all could come, Umi and friends!

Here's my Tuggie! Got a few 'new' lights on her plus rear spots and Nav lights. Hoping it doesn't downpour today. I'm planning to hit up Lucchesi pond in Petaluma at 4PM.

Unfortunately, the pic just doesn't do her justice. You can't see the Christmas tree or presents

Thank you

Russ,

Thanks for hanging out today at the pond. The skys cleared up nicely till around 6PM, then it started to rain as I was packing up. Now - we just have to get your boats seaworthy! I feel a build thread in the making.

Let me know if I can help.

Right now it looks do-able (from here). I'm holding off on my go no-go decision until later.

I'd second that. Light winds and light rain, i'd be there. Heavy winds and heavy rain, I'd be staying in running my micro boat in the tub.

What a great evening! Yes, it was raining... and there was a light breeze but the turnout of boats and people was impressive given the conditions. I think I counted seven well decorated boats in the parade!

Looks like none of the pictures I took are acceptable "point and shoot" seems a little out of its element taking night shots of lighted boats in the rain...

Looking forward to more from Craig C!

It was raining over here in Hayward all afternoon and evening and I figured the City was much worse (as it usually is) so I camped out at home I'm glad you guys had a good time and I still want to get out some evening and sail my newly lit boat on a pond... perhaps I'll get down to Newark tomorrow evening and go for a little sail.
