And thanks for the help identifying our Cabin Cruiser model. We brought it to find out the manufacturer and more info about it. Everyone was very helpful. I discovered that it was made by Ideal Models and the kit name is the Richardson Sedan Cruiser. Thanks everyone. I really had a great time!

Yep, not at all surprized you missed it, it went very quickly! Fishing boat Gambler 2012 was the easiest event I've ever run! The participants seemed to enjoy themselves though!

Great to see you out there too, Mr.Lego! Nice pictures!

Thanks for all the photos guys, they're all awesome and very much appreciated.
mikgin, I like that watercolor treatment you did too.

Tim, I have an old video titled "Well Oiled Machines". It is shot at a model engineering show, and that Chris Craft is in it. Something I have not seen in the photos posted here, is the amazing inlaid wood rear deck on that C~C. Well, that whole boat is just amazing!

Seriously, I have heard rumors that they don't even take Marine 1 out anymore since SFPD cannot afford to pay for her fuel consumption. The Bush admin paid for localities and state govt.s buying lot of toys from their favorite defense contractors but didn't allocate any follow up usage funding. Blow the second pic up to full page size.........you can see the diamonds he did also around the sides of the cockpit also. Someone spent a day or two with the lumber on this one! If you get a chance make sure to compliment the builder on that one for me! Great job on the pics also.

I believe it was made from one of the casting kits that used to be available to model engineers. The unique thing about this particular engine is the clear Lucite valve cover.

Ah.. so not COMPLETY hand made, but still, the attention to detail is amazing.

y'know, if yer going to go to the trouble of machining out a engine for the thing, why not an inlaid sundial patterned floor?

Great pictures! incredible boats!

Y'all are really lucky to have such a large and historic club and that much community interest for such a great turnout and show.

I think the only thing could possibly compare to something like that is when the local model railroad club drags out all the N scale diorama sections to assemble a MONSTER lay out at the science museum.

I assume this event was also a multi club thing with lots of folks traveling in to participate?

Yes and no. The event itself is put on and hosted by the SFMYC alone but we have participants regularly coming from all over the West Coast; from British Columbia to Mexico and a number from points easterly. We even let Virginians play - so why haven't ya come out and brought a case wid'cha? hunh? hunh? Ya getz a bunch of your buds together and rent a bus for all your boats and ROAD TRIP!!! Think of all the mischief ya could get into!!

First off - Here's a real happy shout out to all the others who posted pictures from Wooden Boats on Parade this year! My deepest and heartfelt thanks to you one and all!! I really liked a different take on things and you covered stuff I would have missed. thank you!!

Second - Thanks for all the appreciative comments, both for me and for the other shooters as well.

Third - So then, now the question becomes (while I work away at other photos an' things which includes a couple of focus sets like the Coral Reef set), do you want more postings similar to the what I did with Coral Reef where I focus on a particular boat or builder?? Do you want them stretched out over time as well - e.g. I have many photos of the Coral Reef the go back a number of years, should I have included some of them in the posting/article or should I stick to shots from one event as I did above?

What does the readership say??

ps - Come on up and say Hi if you get a chance to get out to The Lake.

My small vote:
I would say that if it appears more than a few viewers are focused on a particular subject and you have additional pics ( and time/energy ) that additional coverage would be appreciated.

They still take the SFPD Marine 1 out; just not as frequently as the Coast Guard does...

I dont think it was out during this year's fleet week though... Well I didn't see it...

Someone took a video of it running last month.

off-season (informal) SBOD racing

Several SB skippers (Wheelers, whatever) plan to sail informally this off-season. This is an unofficial (beer-can), no fee, registration food or prizes event. Everyone is welcome. The plan is to have "beer-can"-informal-racing once a month October-February. Some of us need more work on RRS & boat rigging than others as we look forward to September, 2013!!!. So, splash your boat-if you can brave the weather-and join us.

SFMYC, SPRECKELS LAKE, GG PARK, SAN FRANCISCO

SBOD OFF-SEASON SAILING SCHEDULE
SAT. OCT 27 1-3 (1 o'clock start)(6 race minimum-more depending on participation) 4 SBs to date.
SAT. NOV 10 1-3 (overlaps the swap-meet)
SAT. DEC 8 1-3 (membership meeting/Christmas party/beer-can race)
SAT JAN 12 1-3
SAT FEB 9 1-3
MARCH: (SFMYC SANCTIONED SBOD REGATTAS BEGIN)

30's at Spreckels

This pic may have been posted in here before but I am gonna put it up anyway.

Found while searching old model boat companies, this is Spreckels in the 30's, no exact date unfortunalely.

Just west of "clubhouse point" along the south edge of Turtle Cove looking to the north east... the little hill on the opposite (north) shore still looks the same today... your pic "*017" is looking right at the spot that the older shot was taken from.

My guess is the photographer was standing in that area, facing north east.

here is a shot I took facing roughly in the same direction as the original- Wish I had a better picture. hill in the background (on the north shore) is the same

Is the stick the guy is holding in the picture from the 30s for changing the rudder direction on the sailboat?

SD,

You 'catch' the boat's bow with the stick, turn it back out toward the water and push it off. Check out the pic of current freesailors that I have posted elsewhere...

Rudder and sail settings are changed at the end of each run to reflect whether the boat is sailing with or into the wind.

I am trying to find where I found it !

I had been searching for info on Berkeley models, found a New York pond yacht site that had this pic and another of Berkeley Marina pond yachting, all circa 1930...

I will keep looking ( maybe you or Aerominded know EXACTLY the model yachting society site in NY that I had seen ) ...

I think this would make a great mash-up picture where the left side of the photo would be a modern view (color...with a modern sailboat and person with radio gear), blended with the original photo on the right (still black and white). It would be a great photo that would span the gap between past and present. Any interest Craig? Bob SF

Didn't recognise it as that, I saw a pic of a Lady puttin a sailboat in at a completely tree/foliage free concrete rimmed area ( I am sure its changed, trees grow ), I will keep searching for that pic..

Wonder if 80 was even there, maybe a wagon trail !

Thanks Craig for the info and pictures on the free sailing boats. It is great that the club in San Francisco has so much history there in the park.

Does anyone know if the wheelchair marathon is on Saturday or Sunday? Or Both? I've been trying to find out if one day or the other would be better to attend the Sub Event.

Also...Craig, thanks for offering to do the mash up photo...it will be really cool.

Soggy Day in GGP today. No wind and lots of heavy mist and fog. I think I had more water on deck than I did below. No sign of any gates for blocking traffic on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing the Sub Event at the Casting Pools. Bob SF

Wheelers are coming, Wheelers are coming!

The Wheeler One Design NorCal Race Series #3 is this Sunday on Spreckels Lake, GG Park with registration ($5) begins at 10:30 with racing at 1.

Four of the top five Wheelers at this year's national in San Diego Nationals are owned by Bay Area skippers and we expect to see them and our SFMYC's Wheelers on the lake.

For those not familiar with Wheelers, they are the largest RC one design boats and are patterned after the full size "Maxi" racers. They are bigger than our Santa Barbara One Design (70" LOA) with a 79" LOA, 30lb minimum draft and driven by 2000 sq in of sail. These are very fast racing boats who's design will allow them to plane in a strong blow.

Sadly, my Wheeler will be on-the-hard during her haul out for upgrades. Perhaps she'll be ready for the next NorCal Wheeler series race 4 which will be in Monterey, November 4th.

I took a pic this AM after leaving the Sub event at the casting ponds...

Of course, the terrain has changed alot since the older shot, I walked around to see if I could get close to the same spot.

The two trees are either gone or so big now I cant make it out.

Also looks like all the pines on the other side are gone and we now have eucalyptus.

The only other vantage point was not doable as there was a large excersize class in the way ...

Nope Viewpoint/location is wrong - it was shot from Guano Point about where the Tai Chi class likes to play.

And yes. the trees were removed more than 60 years ago.

Wheeler One Design NorCal Race 3-Sunday

[[//QUOTE]
Seven Wheelers held the NorCal Wheeler One Design Race 3 at Spreckels Lake, GG Park Sunday. For those not familiar with Wheelers, they are the largest RC racing sailboats in the AMYA fleet at 79"LOA, 30lbs min wt, 85" mast and 2000 sq in of sail.) Race conditions were near perfect for these giants which are patterned after the famed off-shore "Maxi" boats with yesterdays winds blowing 15-20 mph. Next Wheeler race will be November 4th, in Monterey. Seeing these babies run down-wind Sunday was impressive. Whos got it better than this?!
