Thursday Sept 9th - A Couple of 'Big Boys.'
Thursday found Julio (Racer59) out on The Lake with a couple of his big (84 inch hulls), gas-fueled, deep-vees. I was too late in the day to see them run as it had just turned 1pm, but I did get a few frames to share. See ya at The Lake

Saturday, Sept 11: Preview :D
Well, I can't comment on what went on at today's meeting as I had to run an errand downtown during the same period and so couldn't attend, but I was there before and the membership turnout seemed good. The Go-Fastie Gang/Irregulars were well turned out at Lakeside and were having a great time when I got back around 12:40 and got the inaugural run for my new little go-fastie (a ProBoat Widowmaker-22). She needs a little work and tweaking so... a Capt's - Owner's work is never done!
![]() It was also the sixth and final race of the season for the X-Class Free-Sail fleet during the afternoon. That's right! Sailboats racing without radios! *gasp* ![]() Rented a new lens for a tryout; a Nikkor 300mm... Here are a few teasers of what's to come later in the week after I get a chance to work though the shots...

Kmot We honor that in the case of a COP in the area otherwise it is be careful and Don't Hit anybody or anything. If you have any of that shot left and are going to be at the Riverside Do I''ll take one off your hands. Might be a few customers there also, think about it.

Hey Craig,
Julio here. (racer59) Wanted to thank you for some photos of my two 84" Hull. The red one used to be white but I had it repainted in deep red color to match the inline two cylinders I purchased from a local hobby shop owner. Lots of issue with the boat but I managed to get it going. Speed is around 35 mph. Stock two zenoah with clutch. The White one is a copy of the Bonzi Hull. I installed a Quick Draw 35cc Motor with a direct drive on that one. The 35cc QD used to be on the red one before I received the other 84" white hull. Thanks again for the shots. I like your black boat. Good Photos running above the water. Really looked cool !!!! |

Not a crowd (which is nice - good run times without a lot of traffic or apparent frequency issues), but enough to keep things really fun and interesting! It seems to be about a half a dozen to a dozen or so regular drivers and their friends. My impression is also that most folks are also running multiple boats! Come on down - The more the merrier ![]() Craig |

As to the shots though, yep! I was pretty happy with them. Those shots pushed me over the edge and I went out and bought one for me and I'd sworn that I'd never, ever, buy an RTR! LOL! It is definitely a neat little Go-Fastie! Fun to drive (even if handling is a bit twitchy), but the stock plastic prop definitely needs to be upgraded. I took my boat back out to The Lake on Sunday even though the weather was blah, got in a couple of practice laps then opened her up - and blew the prop clean away! Both blades sheared completely off at the base!!! See ya at The Lake!

Saturday Afternoon, Sept 11: X-Class Free Sail Racing
The sixth and final race of the season for the X-Class Free-Sail fleet - These are free-sailors, meaning no radios. The sheets and steering mechanisms are set by hand reflecting wind direction and conditions before each leg of the race and then the boat is pushed off to find its way along the course. The Capt's walk along the shore and turn and push the boats back away from the edge of The Lake. In addition to being the oldest continuously operating club in the US, the SFMYC also has the oldest continuously operating and competing free-sail fleets in North America and possibly the Western Hemisphere. A number of the boats date back to the Golden Era of Model Yachting and beyond to the turn of the last century. Some are over 100 years old and almost all are still sailing.

Sunday Morning, Sept 12 - Electric & Steam Boats; free run time
1) More to come!
2) Well sometime Saturday night the weather turned and the fog rolled in off the Pacific, up over the beach and smothered Golden Gate Park for it's entire length. It was warm and sunny downtown and in many parts of The City, but as usual during this time of year, the Richmond and Sunset got fog! probably because of the weather, turnout for the Sunday Electric and Steam free run time was light this week.

September 18 & 19 - SUB REGATTA @ Casting Pools plus free runing @ Spreckles Lake
The only scheduled SFMYC event is on Sunday afternoon; the sixth and final Star 45 Class race of the 2010 season.
As far as Powerboating; Saturday morning is, as always, Gas/Nitro & other - 10am > 1pm Sunday is Electric and Steam only. - 10am > 1pm Both days are free running (under Park & Rec. Dept.'s rules, of course). Hopefully the weather will be nice (the weather is predicted to be partially sunny) and a good time will be had by all and we won't have to wear too many layers. ![]() ********************************************* ALSO THIS WEEKEND: The Mare Island Squadron of The Sub Committee will be hosting the Annual WEST COAST SUBMARINE REGATTA at the Casting Pools in Golden Gate Park Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th About 150 yards south-west of Spreckels Lake, the entrance to the Casting Pools is on south side of John F. Kennedy Drive across from the Buffalo Field. Here are the coordinates for Google: 37.767599,-122.496768 Also see the maps at end of photo section. Ok, Sorry guys, I just got word on this one myself this (Friday) morning... talk about being bit in the... by timing! Posted it immediately...LINK HEREAnyway - This is a GREAT event held at nearly perfect venue for submarines; a very large, shallow (about waist deep), concrete, fly-casting pool with very clear water, benches and away from the touristas! Everything you could ask for a nice quiet day or two to running your subs. There is even a parking lot with adequate parking. I made it for one afternoon last year and WOW!, I was totally impressed! Got to shoot some frames there (see a few below) and the rest on RCGroups are here. The contact listed on the flyer is Tom Anderson at anderboat@aol.com. I'm going to have to have to rearrange some things, but I'm going for at least a good part of a day, maybe both if I can manage it!!! Hope I see you there or at The Lake.********************************************* And remember next Sunday, it's... The Navigator Regatta
for all scale power boats Sunday, September 26th, 2010 at Spreckels Lake For further information see the Club's Web Site Get directions to Spreckels Lake Here Remember the Power Squadron runs every Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 (steam and electric only) Nitro powered boats, Saturdays 10:00 to 13:00 (Park & Rec Rules) Come on out and join the fun!

Umi...
Sorry 'bout that... Thought they'd gotten something more up on the website... Apologies. Anyway, CaptLee or Aerominded would be a bit better to discuss this as they are involved in setting this event in motion and would be more up on the details for this years event, however, if it is similar to past events (as expected), then it will be a navigational skills event with a fairly complex, timed course. (Especially since CaptLee is almost always the diabolical mastermind behind the course.) CaptLee also usually creates two courses for an event like this. One course is for boats under a certain size and the other for the larger boats. The event itself is named after a model of the Amazon River steamer "Navigator," made in the 1930's (if memory serves correctly) which is in the possession of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club and on permanent display in the Clubhouse. I'll try to get some better pictures this weekend and post them. I'll see what I can dig up for you as far as an old course sheet. ( I think there maybe one posted somewhere on RCGroups.) In the meantime I'll PM the others and have them get over here and explain things... Again, apologies. Craig |

Saturday Morning, Sept 18 - Gas Free Run time PLUS off to the Submarine Races!
Wow!! did the Weather turn out awesome or what????
The morning was depressing as the onshore morning fog usually is, but it still warm. It was also humid enough for the water on the ground had not evaporated even by 11am and if you put on a coat it was sauna time. The fog was finally burning off by 1pm and the sun was playing hide and go seek behind some scatted clouds and by 3pm had pretty much won the day. So weather actually turned out pretty nice. Only a couple of folks turned to for the Gas Boats run time this morning (Julio, Tony(?) and me). I shot a few frames of the "Biohazard" but missed getting any of the "Shockwave" as her owner was breaking down for the day. Then I proceeded to smack my little boat (the Proboat Widowmaker 22) into the side of The Lake and I busted up the prow!!! Mushed fiberglass Got some epoxy bodywork and bondo time ahead of me... *sigh* Anyway, got a few more pictures at The Lake and then went over to watch the..."SUBMARINE RACES" at the Golden Gate Park Fly-Casting Pools Sponsored by The Mare Island Squadron of Sub Committee (officially, it's their Annual West Coast SubRegatta ) Had a blast, especially since this was only a few minutes before the sun started it's reconquista of the area. There were a lot of really, really great folks from the Sub Committee's Mare Island Squadron plus others from California's Central Valley in addition to a number of the local modeling crew as well. (Well! That explains the lousy turn out this morning... the rats were all playing with submersibles at the other pool like me LOL ) And Boy! did they have some wonderful models to show and play with!!Anyway, it was a beautiful day, at a superb venue for submersibles, for what has become an annual event for the Submarine boys and girls and they will be back there tomorrow as well! We're hoping the weather will corporate again too! And yes, gotz lotz o'pictures... Took my new lens - will post as I get them sorted and edited. I'll post some here 'natch, but I'm gonna post many here, in the submarine forum, as well.

Sunday, Sept 19 - Scale and Electric Free Run
Well, the wet-weather prediction was accurate this time...
![]() It went from "Scots Mist"/Heavy Fog and drizzle to some actual rain fairly quickly and that kept people home from Spreckels and the one or two who did come out to run sashayed over the Casting Pools to play with the submariners and provide surface targets for their boats. Only a couple of folks with their youngsters and RTRs showed up at the Lake. As I had made a date with a couple of friends to try a speedboat, We stayed and ran the Widowmaker for a while then we also went over to the Casting Pools as well. The Sub folks had a smaller turnout than Saturday, again probably due to the weather, but a few hardy souls braved the wet to run their boats. I got a few frames of the last day of the Sub Run and in the afternoon shot some of the Star 45 Club race. Will post over the next day or so. Don't forget to check out the gallery for the Sub Regatta here. |

UMI you asked what the Navigator was and will try to keep it short. This year it is a 15 gate course which you get three runs at if you don't hit too many bouys or miss too many gates. A hit is 5 pts, a miss is 10 pts and each run the Skipper is more limited in his movements to operate in. 25 pts and you are eliminated, final run is timed to break ties.
Hope the course map is visible to illustrate. |

It was a wonderful day and a great event! It was great to see many of the ususal suspects at the lake today along with Vspeeds who ran his 47'USCG/SFPD boat, Mr. and Mrs. gtopillado who ran their Atlantic, "Team Ahkneenah" who ran a small fleet of beautiful offshore tugs including a fantastic, newly built Mr. Darby and Al K from Seattle who happened to do very well at the event!!
![]() Great to see everybody!!! ![]() the event went very well with CaptLee doing a great job as CD and setting up an "evil nav course"- not as easy to drive through as it looks on paper- Great day!

It was great meeting every one at the Regatta. The course was harder than it looked on paper. The depth perception in relation to the markers were difficult to judge...for me anyways. Even though I got DQ'd in the 2nd round it was still alot of fun. The weather was beautiful and it was fun seeing all the boats driving around in the lake. After seeing the tugs I think my 1st build will be a tug.
Here are some of the boats at the lake today.

Umi I did not need a reverse feature to get anyone's goat. Most of the runners were into 25 pts by first round, lost a few more on second pass, down to 6 for third round, never needed time to break ties.

September 26th - Annual Navigator Rebatta!
Srry about running late this time... but I will get some more posted soon.
If you like Vspeed's model of San Francisco (Police Dept.) Marine 1, a conversion of the Pro Boat USCG 47’ Motor Lifeboat, his build thread is here. Anyway, as most everyone else has said, it was a beautiful day at Spreckels Lake! The sun was out early and the weather was warm to hot under a clear 'bald-headed' sky with light breezes!! Couldn't ask for better. I got to The Lake about 11:30 or so to shoot the boats and participants after helping some friends set up a large booth at a local street faire that morning. By the time I got to The Lake there were only one or two more boats to run and then it was free run time. The results are above, posted by CaptLee. The regatta was also the shake down event for a new lens. Overall I'm pleased with the results but, as with any new gear, there are learning curves. *sigh* So between shooting the regatta and having to get back to the street faire around 2:30 that day, no run time for me... ![]() Hog... I have some good shots of the Bristol Kit-bash. I'll post some of them for you as well.

Sunday morning - Rain!
![]() Hopefully it'll rain this weekend and clear up for the Swap Meet next Saturday and the Fishing Boat Fun Run on Sunday! And.... It's also FLEET WEEK which means that besides all the cute and funny looking gray boats in port, our peace, quiet and serene serenity will be broken by the low altitude antics of the Blue Angels. WAY COOOOOOL!!!! Gonna' really have an opportunity to shake-down that lens this week WaHoo! If I getz some good shots, anyone want me to post 'em even though F-18s defiantly don't float and are off-topic??

Well today was a buggered up day! Gonna shoot the Blue Angels, Right? 'Course right!
The daughter had a conference at high school with a college councilor and needed Dad there just about that time! LOL... the things we do for offspring! So there I sat with three major pieces of glass (lenses) listening to the jets roar in the distance. The closest I could get was Shot #1. LOL Anyway, she and the counselor finish up, we boogie for the truck and rush cross town and arrive just in time to see the Angels take the final turn back down to Moffeet Field in the South Bay.... ARRRGH! Anyway... Got a few shots of other things... "Fat Albert," the Blue Angels' Marine C-130T logistical support (and performing) aircraft was getting his practice in, along with an F-18 in air-superiority colors. One of Larry Ellison's Cisco aerobatic team (The little red plane in the last shot of the next post) was doing some filming passes, you can make out the camera crew in the open shooting door of the twin engined camera plane... wonder if they saw "Bert" coming up from behind and below like a shark. (The actually had a lot more V-sep than the picture looks like.) The shot they were taking for publicity is here. Anyway, I'll try to get out there tomorrow and get some more frames. I won't be able to shoot Saturday and Sunday, of course, is the Fishing Boat Fun-Run at Spreckels Lake... See some of you there on Sunday. Shot #2 is a private gripe I'd like to share... see if'n it sticks to the walls or something. <mini rant warning> As you can see, it is a fenced off area, they are setting up chairs for the wealthy, the pols and the connected. It's being done by a private company that runs the airshow (Fleet Week has been sub-contracted out). The Marina Green is closed to traffic, all the parking is going to be "reserved," according to the federal cop on site. Sure on Saturday and Sunday, the commoners can hang out on the grass and bring their humble lunches and look at the recruiting exhibits, but the elites will fête behind their fences and barricades and police lines of cops on overtime. All of this on public land, on common ground supposedly for everyones' enjoyment and use. Guess some are, like the pigs in Animal Farm, becoming a bit more equal than others. Once upon a time, America was the land were all were created equal and were supposed to be treated equal. The founding fathers believed in at least partial leveling and feared the rise of elite classes and the super-wealthy. (Remember, while propertied, none of the Founders or Framers were truly wealthy and the Revolutionary Army were mainly what Europeans (and some Americans as well) disdainfully sniffed at as the unwashed "peasant rabble." There were no American millionaires (in equivalent dollars) until the late 1790s.) What are we allowing to happen in this country? <rant off> and if you wanna discuss... lets take it to politics. |

Craig,
Cool pics. Hopefully the weather is good so you could catch em this weekend. I was fortunate enough to see the whole show today. That grey f18 had an emergency during his show and had to fly back to SFO and he requested the "equipment" (Crash Trucks). I followed up and found out he landed safely. |

Nice photos Craig.
![]() Re: the situation..... They pulled the same crap at Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station several years ago. Used to be we could bring our lawn chairs and set them right on the tarmac at airshow center and enjoy the show. Then one year we arrive to find a couple hundred yards of bleachers have been installed and fenced off and they were charging admission to get into the area. If you did not pay, you were relegated to the off sides where you got to look at outbuildings and other stuff in front of you. The reasons for the military shows are to #1 recruit new young people into the armed services and #2 to show the taxpayers what we have payed for and to thank us. Privatizing and charging the taxpayers money for what we have already payed for is so much BS I cannot express it decently. Now, if ALL the money collected were to go to something like Military Family Assistance Fund I would be okay with it. But to richen the coffers of private enterprise on the backs of my taxes, nooo that really tee's me off. |
