Region 6 Championships, Spreckels Lake - Day II Sunday // Heats 9 -18
A quick word: Normally I do not muck about too much with my images other than compositional cropping, clean up, and removing an occasional misplaced item or antenna, this batch has been a bit different due mainly to the weather conditions that weekend. As you can see in the above image, on Sunday I was shooting in a light drizzle with a medium mist / foggy conditions which drastically lowered the contrast and color of my shots and the lousy light forced me to shoot at a much higher ASA setting than I prefer which resulted in 'noisy' images. Photoshop is a wondrous thing, it can "get rid" of a fair portion what the weather had done to the images. Just wanted you to know these have been massaged to get rid of a lot of the foggy, bleached white-outs and other issues. So if the early photographs look like the weather wasn't so bad - tain't so, Compadre - it was not a nice morning to be out with a camera, good, bracing, sailing weather though . It was a dank and dreary day (better than a dark and stormy night eh? ),drizzling and scots mist but better wind this morning.... The Pictures are Done!!! Whew!!

Back from out of town, finished with the Tug Fest photos and I'm working on the images for the Santa Barbara Region Six Regatta now - hopefully will be done by Friday. It's really cool to see other folks posting pictures - a big thanks to BobSF, Kalkurap, sunworksco and the others for their great shots! |

Hey guys,
I have a Riviera 80 for sale. I'll bring it out to the lake every Sunday (except this Sunday) if anyone is interested in checking it out. I'm selling it for $350. If you're interested, pm me or just reply. Includes everything needed to run except for a charger. You also have to mount the dashboard on. |

There was an incident at the lake yesterday involving a runaway gas boat. Thank goodness and luck that no one got hurt. That being said.... I'm sure the following has been posted earlier in this forum in some similar shape or form but has to be repeated to those who don't read the previous pages....
ALWAYS.....check over your electronics.before setting your boat in the water and make sure fail safe is workIng if running gas/nitro and if you don't have one GET one! IF you have not run for awhile...anywhere from a month to years and have an OLD nimh/nicad receiver pack just toss it and buy a fresh one, regardless if old batteries shows full charge the capacity may be shortened due to sitting on the shelf for so long. Also IF you have an old FM transmitter buy a 2.4 ghz radio eliminates the need and worry of checking who else is running the same channel and less likely to glitch. This is HIGHLY recommended and SHOULD be required when running gas/nitro models. Remember be mindful and repectful of others, use common sense, and if you don't know the rules or how we run at the lake ask anyone that is there. Only stupid question is a question you don't ask. Remember WE the powerboats are PRIVILEGED to run here! All it takes is one HUGE complaint to Recs and Park and we are done. We are there to have fun and educate the public as well as to keep EVERYONE out of harm's way. |

Or convert your old radio to a 2.4GHz transmitter module. |

I will just give a summary guy with old gas boat comes to lake with old RX pack and has not run the boat for years and charged rx pack apparently is DEAD, boat takes off and launches onto shore and tries to put blame on someone else's radio being on and that someone had a scanner that says no one else was on that channel.

Thanks Craig for all the SB sailboat race pictures.
Those of us that have never been to Spreckels Lake area and maybe never will but remember reading about this place in old 1950's hobby magazines it is interesting to see the action. |

Now from the first day I ever ran R/C I learned to do a battery and range check (before I even left the house), and a second one before I ever let go of the thing (car, truck, aircraft, or boat). I also usually make sure to have a set of batteries for both the receiver (if it doesn't have a bec) and transmitter too. I plan on having too much fun to deal with dumb things like that, it takes to long to get loaded up to have it go bad for something stupid like that!
I also learned that if you can do a range test around a Navy base (I grew up navy) in that kind of electronic environment like that, that almost anything you can find at the pond (air-field, track) is easy! But then I have been around that my first radios were AM! (My 'new radios' were FM, just saving up for 2.4 LOL) If you can operate in that kind of environment (a good airsearch radar will mess up low channel FM radios (side band?)) Nice to know the excuses at Golden Gate haven't changed since the 80's (when I was there last, sigh) Tom is right. Foo |

Stricken cabin cruiser rescued
A Chris Craft cabin cruiser was stalled near the middle of the lake, “dead in the water,” as a nautical person might say. Then a Coast Guard vessel pulled along-side the stricken cruiser. “Can I give you a push to shore?” asked the coast-guard boat operator. “No,” replied the cruiser captain, “I think I can get it in.” Whereupon the cruiser owner picked up his rod and reel, cast the line and hooked his boat. It was a real sea-rescue situation, but in miniature. All this was taking place on the shore of Speckles Lake, a small lake in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park built early in the 1900’s just for scale model boats. Most every Saturday and Sunday mornings various types of model boats chug, speed, putt-putt and sail around this lake. Such as a highly detailed old restored mahogany run-about, a Mississippi Tow Boat, a tug-boat, or an exact scale model of a famous war ship to high speed racing hydro-planes. You might see a fishing fleet circle an unseen school of fish, or a team of tug-boats maneuver a stricken freighter thru an obstacle course. Hydro-planes racing at record braking scale speeds. And there’s the occasional young child with just a piece of wood tied with a string to a stick running along the shore in an imaginary race. At times there are fireboats, Coast-guard cutters and police launches present in a show of authority. You will even see spectacularly beautifully built live steam launches. There are boats set up just to rescue that stricken cabin-cruiser or anyone that may need a helping push back to shore. There is a group of people that meet most weekends to indulge in a little fantasy of just getting away for awhile and enjoying the “Fun Factor” of “Messin around in boats.” You can be assured of seeing many varieties of boats, this can be from a ready-to-run out of the box to models that have taken years to complete. Some of the yachtsmen and captains have been sailing this lake for years, others just got their boat in the mail yesterday or as a birthday gift and are out for their first voyage. Even with a model boat there are problems with them just as in the real thing. The motor isn’t right, the prop is wrong. What battery should I use? Why does it turn to the right but not left? Bring it over to my table and let’s see if we can fix it. We will even help retrieve it if it gets in trouble. One of the unfortunate things about model boating is that many really great old boats have just disappeared over the years. Stuck in some garage or shed or put up on the shelf to collect dust, even worse, just thrown away. Sometimes they end up with a person that will make it run again. New motor, batteries and radio, along with a fresh coat of paint and varnish can bring even the most forgotten vessel back to life. So if you happen to have model boat, bring it out, and run it, get some help in fixing it up and running again. Bring the family out to the lake and enjoy a day just “Messin around in boats.” cpl.fuzz |

When I was the former setter of bouys, the tugs were more cooperative, didn't need the oars with the onshore positioning system.
I should have advised Aero to have a couple of extra weights on hand, for the uncooperative ones. Just wrap the line around the rudder. Disconnecting batteries optional. And modify the course plan to show the new obstacles. Sorry I missed the live show. Thanks Lego for the highlight. |

Guest Boat from Kentucky for Wooden Boats on Parade
Looking at the poster for this years Wooden Boats on Parade, I wanted to report that a new Captain of the HMS Surprise is going to sail down the east coast from Kentucky and go around the horn and back up the west coast to try and make it in time for this years Wooden Boats on Parade event. This was the latest photo of her underway as of two days ago.
